After years of middling about, Capcom’s found itself on quite the hot streak with multiple back to back years of being the most profitable the company’s been in decades if not its entire history, and they have big plans to go even higher in the near future — but hopefully not fly too close to the sun.

During their most recent financial results presentation, a representative for the publishing studio stated Capcom plans to grow its annual game sales to a staggering 100 million units per year while also doubling down on their future focus of the PC market.

In response to a question regarding their image for annual sales and pipeline strategy with catalog sales showing “favorable growth,” this is what the makers of Street Fighter had to say on the matter.

“In the long-term, we aim to achieve 100 million units in annual sales volume, keeping in mind the global game hardware installation base with a focus on the PC platform,” stated Capcom. “In aiming for 100 million units in annual sales, we will continue to expand our development pipeline in order to steadily release high-quality new titles that will contribute to earnings continuously going forward.”

They don’t specify how long they expect that growth to reach 100 million would take, but it’s a massive leap from where the company is even now.

According to their financial integrated report for the 2021 fiscal year, Capcom sold 30.1 million games over that period, and those numbers are already more than double what the company was pushing in 2016.

What it would take to essentially more than triple the sales of one of their most successful years ever is rather difficult to imagine, and it’s hard not to think about how the company has often inflated expectations in the past to the detriment of their games.

Street Fighter 5 missed its sales target of 2 million copies by the end of the first month while Street Fighter X Tekken and Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite also failed to reach their projections, and we all know what happened to the latter 2 games — although they admittedly had more problems than just average sales.

This isn’t really meant to stoke up the flames of concern yet with the overall positive trajectory of Capcom over the past 4–5 years, but 100 million games a year seems hyper exaggerated to their current actual output.

Even the company’s best-selling game ever, Monster Hunter World has “only” sold 27.2 million copies over its lifetime if you include Iceborne, and combining the top 10 Capcom releases only nets you 91.6 million games.

With the launch of Street Fighter 6 now on the horizon sometime in the near future, we can only hope that…
