The Street Fighter 3 series aimed to bring in an entire batch of fresh faces into the fold, with Capcom going so far as to originally have no plans to have series poster boy Ryu and his fiery counterpart Ken on the playable roster. Though the Shotos would go on to be on the Street Fighter 3: New Generation roster, the series’ other fighters are among the most out there and unique on the design front that the franchise has ever seen.
Though the likes of the one-armed turtle hermit Oro and stretchy genetic experiment Necro are household names now, they’re still oddballs both in their looks and their moves. However, it seems that the early SF3 combatant concepts were even more wild in some respects, and Capcom has provided fans with a look at the “earliest” character concept designs over on Twitter this morning.
According to Twitter’s on-site translation feature, the official Capcom Artwork page noted that these were the earliest concept designs for the series. It also goes on to suggest that these were illustrated by longtime and legendary Capcom artist Akiman, who is credited with both character design and promotional artwork for Street Fighter 3.
This glimpse at some of the ideas that didn’t make the cut comes to us as part of the celebration of Street Fighter’s 35th anniversary. From the looks of it, there are 15 different character concept designs to look over, and they range from what appears to be a giant robot to a straight up velociraptor
The first image we see features the dinosaur, as well as a character who looks a lot like Cody from Final Fight. Additionally, a mysterious, messy-haired person, and what looks to be a Greek statue figure are also shown, the latter potentially being what the series’ boss Gill evolved into.
A big hairy monster, a mad scientist, and even a bat-winged fighter were all ideas that never made it off the chopping block, it seems. Capcom certainly appeared to have a running theme of the supernatural for several of these designs.
