Capcom has one of the largest stables of iconic video games and characters over their 40+ year history even if they don’t do a lot with quite a few of them now.
After like four months and over 250,000 votes, the company just revealed the full results of their Super Elections in great detail, which shows the Capcom series fans would most like to see sequels, remakes or reboots for.
For the most wanted sequel / new game question, it seems the Dino Crisis fans banded together to make a push after feeling snubbed by last year’s Exoprimal, considering the series that hasn’t gotten an entry in since 2003, came in first.
The dinosaur survival horror game received a whopping 80,769 votes, which equates to almost 32% of those who took part in the survey said Dino Crisis as one of their top choices.
It managed to beat out the likes of even Mega Man, Devil May Cry and Resident Evil.
Fighting game fans, however, may be very interested to see Darkstalkers and VS. Capcom come in back to back at 5th and 6th place respectively with over 45,000 votes each (or around 18% apiece).
And even though we just got Street Fighter 6 last year, it still made the list too at 17th.
When breaking the results down further, Dino Crisis didn’t even appear in the top 10 for Japan while Darkstalkers was 5th and VS. Capcom finished 9th.
In the rest of the world, VS. Capcom actually came out slightly ahead in 5th place over Darkstalkers at 6th.
Interestingly, voters claiming to be in their 50–60’s actually had Darkstalkers in number one spot over Dino Crisis while 30–40s had it at 5th and 10–20s at 8th, who were also the only generation to put VS. Capcom over it.
Here’s the full breakdown of the top 20 overall by total votes.
1. Dino Crisis (80,769)
2. Mega Man (63,395)
3. Devil May Cry (60,371)
4. Resident Evil (48,109)
5. Darkstalkers (47,818)
6. VS. Capcom (46,255)
7. Okami (45,841)
8. Ace Attorney (43,840)
9. Onimusha (39,324)
10. Breath of Fire (37,286)
11. Monster Hunter (33,786)
12. Dead Rising (22,747)
13. Lost Planet (17,512)
14. Sengoku Basara (15,958)
15. Final Fight (14,159)
16. Dragon’s Dogma (14,095)
17. Street Fighter (11,756)
18. Ghosts ‘n Goblins (6,979)
19. 1942 (4,531)
20. Toraware No Paruma (3,931)
Things get even more fascinating when looking at the results for “game that you would like to see completely remade with the latest technology, including character design and story direction?” category.
The number one response there was that the fan choice was “not in here” with over double the votes of Onimusha and Breath of Fire.
Since we can’t see the original poll anymore or the expanded results, it’s hard to say what that meant for most people, but based on the rest of the questions, it was probably Dino Crisis too.
Rival Schools wasn’t included in the new entry question, but it did manage to get 5th place in remake responses impressively with 28,496 votes along with Final Fight at 7th with 9,974.
Japan especially wants to go back to class considering Rival Schools actually came in 2nd place there ahead of both Breath of Fire and Onimusha while it was 5th in the rest of the world.
They even included fan messages for the fighting game not once but twice that’s remained dormant for almost 25 years.
One more question we wanted to include for fun now was that of which Capcom game people played first.
Street Fighter 2: The World Warrior actually came in 2nd place behind Mega Man and ahead of Resident Evil.
Those in their 30–40’s had SF2 as their number one (and Super Turbo at 8), which makes sense as the generation that grew up with the ’90s arcade scene still intact while those in their 10–20’s don’t have any titles from those days.
Now, these results don’t dictate what Capcom is going to work on in the future, but it does send a message as to what their fans are actively looking for out of them — and they’ve made those results completely open to the public.
It’s been over a decade since the release of Darkstalkers Resurrection and the infamous “Darkstalkers are not dead” teaser but there is certainly interest in more.
The night warriors did headline the Capcom Fighting Collection that released almost two years ago, but that hasn’t managed to hit 1 million sales yet in all that time, which is a point of concern for the potential for a larger return.
With Terry Bogard and Mai Shiranui joining Street Fighter 6 as the series’ first crossover characters, many fans are hopeful this is opening the door to Capcom vs. SNK 3 though we’re also a bit worried this could actually have the opposite effect.
And now that Hideaki Itsuno has completed both Devil May Cry 5 and Dragon’s Dogma 2, maybe he’ll come back to fighting games one last time to give Rival Schools fans what they’re asking for.
But if you’re a big Power Stone fan, it seems you probably shouldn’t be getting your hopes up unfortunately.
