Capcom has been proving they’re listening to the cries and complaints of Street Fighter fans as they’ve made clear motions to right many of the wrongs from the Street Fighter 5 days (from both within and without in-game experiences) as we close in on Street Fighter 6’s 2023 release.
One of the characters who stood out as particularly mishandled in SF5, Ken Masters, is getting a ton of attention from developers now. Today the official Street Fighter Twitter gave us a “sneak peek” at Ken’s “mysterious story” in SF6.
First and foremost, here are the two images they shared along with the caption, “Witness Ken’s mysterious story when you play Arcade Mode in Street Fighter 6. To whet your appetite, here’s a sneak peek at what you can expect.”

We’re definitely interested in seeing where things will go with “on the lamb” Ken, and that’s already a win compared to where things were with Mr. Masters around this time in the SF5 chapter.
The most prominent sore thumb aspect of SF5 Ken had to be his hair, which looked so much like a bushel of bananas that fans simply couldn’t get over it. It wasn’t endearing, it was distracting, and it was one more (relatively small, but Ken is an especially important OG Street Fighter figure) straw to pile onto the camel’s back.
Having one of your main legacy characters being primarily discussed for his hair is already not a good look, but let me ask those of you who played through Street Fighter 5, do you recall much of Ken’s story?
The role he plays in A Shadow Falls, the game’s cinematic story mode, is utterly unnecessary. He’s around because the writers want him around, but he doesn’t contribute anything unique to the plot, nor does he undergo or overcome any noteworthy changes or obstacles. He’s just… there mostly.
Ken fans were simply not satisfied with the handling of their character in this chapter, and the flow of internet complaints and backlash was fierce as a result. This time around, Capcom is making Ken and his mysterious story one of the most intriguing points and main draws for garnering SF6 interest… and it’s working.
Luke is the new main focal character for SF6, and in his Street Fighter 5 story we visit him as a child as he shares some final moments with his father. The pair are at a shopping mall when a terrorist attack occurs, and though he’s able to save Luke along with many others, Luke’s father winds up perishing.
With the images of Ken and his being deemed a terrorist, it’s clear Capcom is weaving Ken, and his no longer banana-like hair, into a main plot thread. Not only this, but we’re finally getting to see a brand new side of the storied character.
Mr. Masters has traditionally been rich, and while he’s used his fortune for good, he’s now going to be operating without that safety net. In fact, it seems he’s lost most all avenues of security.
He’ll likely be a mistaken rival for Luke, who will surely be looking to take revenge given the way Ken is being mistaken to be the terrorist killer of his father. Whatever happens, it’s already clear Capcom is doing a lot to make things right by Ken fans, and it’s one of the many wonderful things we’re seeing heading into Street Fighter 6.
What do you think about what we’ve seen for Ken (and SF6 as a whole) thus far? Hit us up in the comments to share your thoughts.
