CALABAR, NIGERIA – In the wake of a boat mishap at Calabar’s Marina Resort that left three medical students missing, Rt. Hon. Bassey Akiba, a member of the National Assembly in the Green Chambers, representing Calabar Municipality/Odukpani Federal Constituency has called for a comprehensive investigation and enhanced safety measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Akiba who expressed his condolences to the affected families, emphasized the urgent need for a thorough investigation into the mishap. He called on the relevant authorities to prioritize safety measures and strengthen water transportation regulations, aiming to prevent overloading and ensure the well-being of all passengers.
Recall that in a tragic incident that unfolded on Saturday at the Marina Resort in Calabar, 14 medical students from various medical colleges across the country were in Calabar attending the annual Nigerian Medical Students Association (NIMSA) Event, known as ‘The Paradise Experience,’ where involved in a boat mishaps. While 11 of them were successfully rescued, the fate of the remaining three from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria and the University of Uyo (UNIUYO) remains uncertain, casting a shadow of sorrow over the medical community.
“This incident has left our community in deep sorrow, and the pain is felt by all,” said Rt. Hon. Bassey Akiba. “We stand in solidarity with the University of Calabar Medical Students Association and the entire medical community. We recognize the immeasurable loss they have suffered and offer our support during this difficult time.”
“While search and rescue operations are underway, with naval officers and other teams tirelessly working to locate the missing students, I want to commend their dedication and bravery, even as i praye for their success.” He said.
