Burnley pile pressure on Everton as Clarets beat Southampton to move one point behind Frank Lampard’s side

Burnley kept their survival bid well and truly alive as they beat Southampton 2-0 at Turf Moor on Thursday night.

The vital three points meant the Clarets moved to just one point behind Everton and piled the pressure on Frank Lampard’s side.

Burnley picked up a vital three points at Turf Moor

Connor Roberts and Nathan Collins scored first half goals as Mike Jackson’s side outplayed the Saints in a result that could give them the momentum they need.

It was the first win for Burnley since Sean Dyche was sacked as manager and that decision has not consigned them to relegation just yet as many thought.

Southampton had enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges as Oriol Romeu and Stuart Armstrong went close to scoring, but it was Burnley who took a vital lead with 12 minutes gone.

Connor Roberts’ first Burnley goal was a beauty as he cut inside on his left and bent the ball beyond the reach of Fraser Forster.

Fraser Forster had made superb saves to deny Wout Weghorst, Dwight McNeil and Jay Rodriguez but could only watch in the 44th minute as Nathan Collins rose to head in Josh Brownhill’s corner – with the goal surviving a VAR check for a possible offside against Jack Cork.

In the second half, Burnley had another effort ruled out by VAR and then a shout for a penalty turned down but it did not matter as all three points went their way.

The Clarets moved to 28 points and just one behind the Toffees, who have a game in hand.
