Bulldogs end regular season with extra-inning win over Flomaton, 4-3

After falling at home to Charles Henderson on Friday, the Andalusia Bulldogs rebounded to end the regular season on a high note with a 4-3 extra-inning win over Flomaton Monday.

As the 5A Area 3 champions, the Bulldogs will host Faith Acacemy Friday to begin the playoffs.

Flomaton and Andalusia battled throughout the game with the score tied until the ninth inning. A wild pitch that allowed Connor Ray to score in the top of the seventh broke the tie and a double-play in the bottom of the inning secured the Bulldog victory.

Andalusia struck first in the top of the second. Landen Butler led off the inning with a walk and a single by Kielan Davis put two on for the Bulldogs. A one-out double off the bat of Sawyer Hardy brought both runners home for a 2-0 lead. Hardy scored later on a wild pitch to make the score 3-0.

Flomaton got on the board in the bottom of the third with some clutch hitting. With two outs, Harper Harrison hit a double to centerfield and scored on a single by Ross Bell. Another double, this one by Michael Wedgeworth, scored Bell to cut the Bulldog lead to 3-2.

Flomaton tied the game at 3-3 in the fourth inning on an RBI double by Braden Nall.

While Andalusia threatened in the top of the seventh with the bases loaded, the score remained tied to send the game into extra innings.

The Bulldogs opened the ninth inning with a single by Connor Ray and he moved to second on a sacrfice by Hardy. A grounder by Mason Sheridan moved Ray to third with two outs. A wild pitch led to Connor scoring what would prove to be the winning run.

Davis and Ray each ended the game with two hits and two runs scored. Hardy hit a double for two RBI.

The Bulldogs used three pitchers in the game. Asher Bently got the start, going four innings, surrendering seven hits with two strikeouts. Charlie Walsh pitched two innings with two strikeouts and Davis pitched the final three innings, recording one strikeout.

Charles Henderson jumped out to a quick lead after a lead-off walk followed by a fielding error and a single led to the first run coming across the plate. Andalusia escaped the inning with no more damage done with a double play initiated by second baseman Asher Bentley and turned at second base by shortstop Riley Cravey.

After a quiet second inning, the Trojans made the score 2-0 with two doubles in the third.

The Bulldogs and pitcher Landen Butler held Charles Henderson at two runs over the next three innings. Andalusia managed to push a run across in the bottom of the fifth to make it a one-run game, 2-1. Butler led off the inning with a walk. With one out, Kielan Davis drew a walk and Connor Ray reached by being hit by a pitch, loading the bases for the Bulldogs with two outs. Neilex Ferrell, who came in as pinch runner for Butler, tagged up and scored on a sacrifice fly by Mason Sheridan. A fielder’s choice ended the Bulldogs’ chance to tie the game.

Charles Henderson scored another run in the top of the sixth with two walks and a single, increasing their lead back to two runs, 3-1.

The Bulldogs managed to work the bases full in the bottom of the sixth, but could not push a run home. In the seventh, Ray led off with a single, but a double play followed by another groundball ended the hope for a late comeback.

Ray, Row Thorn and Grover Wells each had one single for the Bulldogs. Sheridan’s sacrifice fly was the only RBI of the game. Butler and Davis each recorded two walks.

Butler pitched five innings, giving up five hits and two earned runs. Charlie Walsh pitched the final two innings, allowing three hits and no runs.
