The leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have just arrived at the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation for a closed-door meeting with government representatives to resolve the ongoing nationwide strike over minimum wage.
This was confirmed by a source from the union who spoke to PUNCH saying that “We are also meeting with the government representative in the SGF office today. Already seated awaiting the government representative.”
The NLC spokesman, Benson Upah did not respond to calls and text message seeking his comment on the proposed meeting with the government team.
SaharaReporters had earlier reported how the government invited leaders and stakeholders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) for an emergency meeting over the ongoing nationwide strike.
The Labour Union commenced an indefinite strike on Monday despite last-minute moves by the National Assembly leadership to avert the industrial action.
The representatives of organised labour on Sunday said they lacked the power to call off the strike, adding that there was no going on the industrial action on Monday.
The labour leaders, however, promised to meet internally later to discuss the appeal made by the leadership of the Senate and the House of Representatives to suspend the strike, in order not to compound the hardship of Nigerians.
SaharaReporters had also reported how the strike has affected major sectors of the country, including judiciary, aviation and education.
