However, the match was marred by the scenes in the stands with bottles and missiles been thrown between both sets of supporters with stewards and riot police having to intervene.

Sam Matterface said on commentary for talkSPORT during the final moments of the match: “Look at the Marseille fans on the far side, they’re trying to get at the Tottenham fans.

“They’re throwing things at the Tottenham fans and they’re charging towards the netting of segregation.

“Unseemly scenes. There’s a hoard of stewards and riot police getting involved now as bottles are thrown from either side of the divide.

“That is absolutely a disgraceful way to end the match… police are trying to form a line between the two sets of fans to stop missiles being thrown between the two sets of supporters.

“There’s been a flare-up and the Marseille fans are being driven further away.

“I don’t know what started it because we weren’t privy to that but it escalated very quickly.”

After the match finished, Adrian Durham added: “There are still things, it looked like bottles being thrown mainly from the Marseille fans towards the Spurs fans.

“Occasionally something will be thrown back in anger by the Spurs fans but there’s little doubt from what we’ve seen towards the end of the game that the Marseille fans have been the aggressors.

“They were the ones that went to the cordon approaching and confronting the Spurs fans and then throwing various missiles towards them.

“Towards the end of the game it was very, very ugly and I’m sure there will be repercussions.

“Spurs fans mainly had arms outstretched not saying ‘come on, let’s have a go’ but ‘what the hell is going on?’”

The situation then appeared to calm down, however, further trouble in the stands was spotted a few minutes later.

Matterface added: “There are further problems, a flare has been dropped or tossed into the Spurs side of that end away to our left-hand side, there’s smoke billowing seats and stewards are rushing in to move people away from some sort of incendiary device. They’ve dealt with that now.

“This is a really devastating evening for a return to Champions League football at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.”
