The Borno State Police Command has recovered eight Unexploded Ordnance (UXO’s) in the Dala and Gwande areas of Maiduguri, the state’s capital.
The command, on Saturday, revealed that the recovery followed a distress call about some unidentified objects suspected to be explosives clustered near an uncompleted building in the said areas.
A statement signed by the spokesperson of the command, ASP Grace Micheal noted the call, received about 8:43 pm on Friday, led to the deployment of the command’s explosive ordnance disposal team to the scene.
“Six (6) projectiles and one unexploded mortar bomb were recovered to a safer ground,” the police disclosed.
On the same day, the command received a distress call from the Gwange area that an unidentified object suspected to be an unexploded ordnance was sighted.
The command said its operatives swung into action, and cleared the area, recovering one unexploded hand grenade.
“Preliminary Investigations further reveals that the Ordnance were washed ashore by the recent devastating flood incident in the state.
“Members of Both communities have been lectured on Explosive Ordnance Risk Awareness (EORE) and Safety measures,” the police said.
The statement noted, “The Borno State Commissioner of Police CP Yusufu Mohammed Lawal further re-assures the Command’s commitment to ensuring Public safety and security of all and sundry.
“In this regard, Public are advised to remain calm and be vigilant, to also report any suspicious objects or activities in their respective areas to police through the following emergency contacts: 0806 807 5581, 0802 347 3293.”
Recall that the state recorded a flood disaster in September that submerged communities in Maiduguri and Jere, and displaced an estimated 400,000 households.
