Billy Joe Saunders in talks for next fight as Eddie Hearn proposes John Ryder rematch and also gives updates on Lawrence Okolie and Callum Smith

Eddie Hearn has told talkSPORT.com he has had talks with Billy Joe Saunders’ representatives about potentially getting him back in the ring later in 2022.

The former WBO middleweight and super-middleweight world champion suffered the first defeat of his career last year as he was stopped by Canelo Alvarez.

In the aftermath, Saunders stated that he was considering retirement.

Now though, it appears he is looking to fight on.

When asked if he’d spoken to Saunders, Hearn told talkSPORT.com’s Alex McCarthy: “I have actually, or some people that work with him.

“I’d like to see Billy Joe back in the ring.

“We’re talking to him about possible fights in September/October.

“He has gotta get back in the gym and take the weight off because he’s notorious for enjoying himself in between camps.

“But he’s a very good fighter.

Canelo stopped Saunders by fracturing his eye socket

“Until he broke his eye socket against Canelo Alvarez, he was having a great fight.

“He’s controversial, he’s talented, and of course the Billy Joe Saunders vs Chris Eubank Jr fight down the road – I don’t believe you’ll see that this year anyway.

“But I’d like to see John Ryder fight Billy Joe Saunders.

“They had a great fight a few years ago, it was very close.

“John’s got great momentum after the Daniel Jacobs fight and hopefully we can get Billy Joe back in the ring.”

Like Saunders, Callum Smith lost his super-middleweight world title to Canelo

Giving an update on another former super-middleweight world champion Callum Smith, Hearn said: “He’s gonna be fighting on the AJ card.

“He’s number one now with the WBC to be mandatory for the Artur Beterbiev vs Joe Smith Jr winner.

“So looking to have either a final eliminator with the WBC or just move forward and stay in that queue if you like.

“The winner of Saturday’s fight [Joshua Buatsi vs Craig Richards] could be a big domestic fight later this year.

“And Callum, quite rightly, isn’t looking at the domestic scene.

“He wants to become a two-time world champion.

“But how long do you wait? And he’ll fancy himself to beat the winner of this fight.”

Okolie is the WBO cruiserweight world champion

And updating on Lawrence Okolie, Hearn added: “He’s gonna also fight on the AJ card in July.

“We’re looking to try and land a unification fight for Lawrence.

“He needs that now because he’s gonna move to heavyweight sooner or later.

“We’re talking to the other champions and hopefully we can make it happen.”
