In recent developments, Alvaro Fernandez Carreras, Manchester United’s young defender, is reportedly on the verge of a switch to Benfica on a loan deal, as per Record.
Reports have indicated that the 20-year-old Spanish left-back, who is currently on a loan spell at Granada, is close to sealing a move away from Old Trafford.
Fernandez, who joined Manchester United from Real Madrid in 2020, has had limited exposure with the Red Devils, featuring mainly in their U21 side and not making any appearances for the senior team.
His stint at Granada this season follows a loan at Preston in the Championship last season, where he was a regular, appearing in 39 of their 46 league games.
Despite Manchester United’s current injury woes, with players like Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Tyrell Malacia, and Lisandro Martinez sidelined, it seems Fernandez won’t be part of Erik ten Hag’s plans.
Portuguese outlet Record has reported that Benfica is close to finalising the deal for the young defender, though it’s noted that there are still some finer points to be ironed out before the transfer is official.
The exact nature of the potential move is yet to be confirmed. Respected football journalist Fabrizio Romano has suggested that the deal could end up being a loan arrangement.
This move comes as Granada, where Fernandez has made 14 appearances this season, finds itself struggling in La Liga, currently in the relegation zone after managing only two wins in their first 19 games.
