Super Smash Bros. Ultimate finished its post-launch development cycle with a total of 86 characters on the roster. Despite having a huge selection of fighters to choose from, the fans still want more gaming icon representation.
One character that has yet to be officially added to a Super Smash Bros. roster is Knuckles the Echidna from Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog series. Unofficially, however, Knuckles did become playable in Project Plus (a continuation of Project M), a mod that attempted to make Super Smash Bros. Brawl feel more like its predecessor, Super Smash Bros. Melee.
Even to this day, it turns out that there’s still a desire to see Knuckles joining the fight. As such, modders have apparently been working on inserting Knuckles into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
The Beefy Smash Doods were recently given the opportunity to try Knuckles out in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate before the mod is finished. A video has been uploaded that showcases everything that Knuckle is capable of in this mod.
As expected, Knuckles functions fairly identical in this mod to how he does in Project Plus. Though he’s significantly slower than Sonic, his attacks tend to pack a lot more of a punch to compensate.
Regardless, Knuckles has apparently inherited Sonic’s Spin Dash as his down special. Considering the current meta of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, this is a good move to have as it gives Knuckles excellent ground mobility while his glide side special allows him to dominate in the air.
It’s also interesting to note that the modders have changed the title screen of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate specifically for this mod. Upon booting up the game, fans will be treated to a title card saying “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate & Knuckles,” which is reminiscent of the “Sonic 3 & Knuckles” combination game of 1994.
