In a recent inspection of the Bebi Airstrip in Obudu LGA, Cross River State, the Acting Manager, Mr. Oko Kelvin, expressed optimism about the facility’s imminent full operation. Three light aircraft have already touched down this year, marking a significant step toward revitalizing the airstrip.
During the inspection led by Commissioner for Aviation, Captain Enoh Utum Inah, Mr. Kelvin outlined challenges hindering the airstrip’s progress. These include encroachment issues, willful destruction of government property due to a dilapidated fence, and outdated equipment.
Commissioner Inah highlighted the strategic importance of Bebi Airstrip, emphasizing its role in unlocking economic opportunities. With the Obudu German Hospital and the Canadian University in close proximity, the commissioner stressed the need to restore the airstrip to attract global tourists.
“It is expedient to revamp the Bebi Airstrip to encourage the inflow of people from across the globe for tourism,” Commissioner Inah remarked during the tour. He commended the ongoing development in Cross River State, particularly in Obudu LGA, citing the Canadian University and German Hospital as valuable additions to the renowned Obudu Cattle Ranch.
“As a state, we are conscious of what we are doing, and we have sought the collaboration of investors both locally and internationally. We believe in action, and soonest, the fruits of what I am saying will be seen,” he assured, underscoring the commitment to bringing the Bebi Airstrip back to life.
The resuscitation of Bebi Airstrip holds promise for Cross River State’s tourism sector, aligning with the government’s efforts to attract both local and international investments. As developments unfold, the state anticipates a surge in tourism, leveraging the synergy between the airstrip and the neighboring healthcare and educational institutions.
