Manchester United may have just received a massive boost in their long-term pursuit of Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.
United have been interested in de Jong since the summer of 2022. The Red Devils focused on the midfielder as their priority target through the entire window.
However, when the deal didn’t come off, United went for a last-minute signing of Casemiro instead, valuing him at £59 million.
United haven’t given up hope of signing their long-term target though, with interest picking back up and rumours circling each transfer window.
This summer was no different, with interest being renewed as United looked to transform their squad.
However, the midfielder spoke out about the interest, addressing his desire to remain in Spain, commenting: “Staying at Barca? Yes, I’m very happy in Barcelona with my family, for sure.”
He continued: “[Barcelona boss] Hansi Flick wants me to be key. I talked to him. It was good.”

Manchester United’s ongoing interest in Frenkie de Jong
Now, with United in a new Era under Ruben Amorim, it’s unsure if The Red Devils still consider the star as part of their plans.
This summer saw United sign Manuel Ugarte, whilst Kobbie Mainoo has broken into the squad last season making him a core member of the starting eleven.
However, United could still be tempted, with Catalunya Radio revealing that Barca are looking to sell the midfielder for £16.5 million.
With United’s financial pressures limiting big-money signings, this cut-price signing could be within the club’s price range.
However, The Red Devils are prioritising the signing of a left-wing-back and a striker, with these being the key focus areas of development in Amorim’s system.
