Bandai Namco suspends more Tekken 8 accounts, additional unauthorized activity added to list of ban worthy transgressions

The online world of Tekken 8 has been a bit marred by cheaters and bad actors since the hot new title dropped back in January, and developer Bandai Namco has been working to update the experience to limit nefarious actions.

In addition to cheating, plugging (disconnecting early), inappropriate names or custom creations, glitching, rank boosting, and unauthorized use of mods, Bandai has added yet another transgression that will get players’ accounts suspended should they engage in it.

Idling during online matches appears to be the next big thing in terms of online Tekken 8 griefing. Whether you’re trying to manipulate matches or simply not paying attention after queuing up for ranked, jumping in online and not playing can now have some hefty consequence attached to it.

You can read the Tekken team’s official statement on the bans below.

Account Suspensions – April 25, 2024

We’ve suspended #TEKKEN8 accounts involved in malicious and unauthorized activities, including:

• Intentional disconnects

• Cheating

• Inappropriate customizations / player names/ chat messages

• Idling during online matches

This action targets users who violated the End User License Agreement (EULA) after receiving multiple in-game reports.

We plan to continue account suspensions against #TEKKEN8 players who break these game rules. Further updates as soon as new information is available.

This has been an ongoing war for Bandai Namco as many of these counter griefing measures were not in place initially. This was due in part, apparently, because of the varying legal protections that Bandai must acknowledge from country to country.

Some players will inevitably respond to being banned with legal action, and so Bandai needed to accrue enough evidence and ensure their approaches were kosher on all fronts before rolling out too many suspensions.

“Unbelievably, in our experience, in every game, there are always players who will file a lawsuit if you report a ban,” stated Tekken 8 Director Katsuhiro Harada over X. “In preparation for this, we have all kinds of evidence preserved and ready to be submitted.”

This all comes at a time where Tekken 8’s Steam ratings have dropped to “mostly negative”, with some reviews citing the ongoing online issues feeling especially egregious while the game suffers in other arenas (such as pricing for additional DLC content).
