Baby kidnapped from San Jose home; vehicle description released and then retracted

SAN JOSE – Authorities on Monday released what they said was a possible description of the vehicle of the man who abducted a 3-month-old boy earlier in the day from an apartment in San Jose but then deleted it after another police agency said they haven’t confirmed the car.

The California Highway Patrol posted a picture on Twitter of a 2011 Silver Nissan Quest with CA license plate 7HWF353 and a white circular sticker in the lower left corner of the rear window, saying it was possible suspect vehicle. The tweet was deleted after the San Jose Police Department, the leading agency for the investigation, said they haven’t confirmed it was the car.

The kidnapping was reported just after 1 p.m. at a two-story apartment building on the 1000 block of Elm Street, two blocks from Bellarmine College Preparatory. After returning home from a shopping trip, the child’s grandmother had taken him inside and then gone back to the car to unload groceries, San Jose police Sgt. Christian Camarillo said at a news conference. The baby was gone when she returned.

“In that short amount of time, someone entered the apartment and left with the baby,” Camarillo said.

The man was caught on surveillance camera leaving the scene with the child in a carrier. Neither the grandmother nor the mother, who was at work at the time of the kidnapping, recognized him, Camarillo said.

The child’s father is incarcerated and currently “out of the picture,” Camarillo said.

“I don’t know whether or not that is going to play into this,” he said. “Obviously we’re going to talk to him soon. We’re doing everything we can to locate this baby.”

The suspect was described as a Latino man with a dark complexion and short hair. He was last seen wearing a gray baseball cap, a black face mask, a dark blue shirt, black pants and gray shoes with white trim.

The baby, Brandon Cuellar, was last seen wearing a white long-sleeve onesie with dinosaurs on it.

As officers continue to search for additional video of the suspect, Camarillo called on the public to phone in any tips. A yet-to-be-determined cash reward is being offered for information, he added.

“Today someone is walking around with a 3-month-old baby that they did not have yesterday,” Camarillo said. “It is hard to recognize the person who took the baby. He is wearing a mask. But we need the public’s help right now in San Jose to find this baby.”

Laura Torres, who lives in the same building as the infant and his family, said she went outside Sunday night to smoke a cigarette and encountered a man she did not know sitting on a bench. He asked to borrow a charger and to go inside her apartment to charge his phone, she said.

“He was suspicious,” said Torres, adding that the man was also wearing a gray hat. The man then walked into an adjacent apartment…
