Sen. Ben Ayade, Governor of Cross River State has suspended the 2021 Calabar Carnival. This means that the Carnival Calabar 2021 will not hold.
THE PARADISE NEWS gathered that the suspension of the Carnival Calabar 2021 was made known by the Governor on Monday, November 29, 2021, at the State Executive Council Chambers, in a meeting attended by Carnival Band leaders, Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Eteng Jones Williams, Members of the State Executive Council, Local Government Chairmen from the 18 Council Areas of the State.
Governor Ayade cited the health concerns arising from the outbreak of the COVID-19 variant, Omicron, as well as the prevailing security situation as reasons for the suspension.
He said he would not as governor and leader compromise the lives and safety of the citizens for the fleeting excitement of the Carnival.
Before announcing the suspension, Ayade had subjected the decision to popular votes, following which the majority of the stakeholders voted for the suspension of the Carnival Calabar 2021.
THE PARADISE NEWS reports that this is the second time in a row the Carnival Calabar will not held since its inception in 2004. The last time it did not hold was in 2020, due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
