The answers for today’s Strands were pretty straightforward. I started off with the first set of theme words – CHAI and ESPRESSO. Once I spotted MENU, solving the Spangram and the rest of theme words was an easy affair.

What is NYT Strands Spangram and How Does It Work?

Every NYT Strands puzzle consists of a unique word or phrase that’s called the Spangram. This word or set of words will run the length of two opposite sides of the grid. One thing to note here is that, a Spangram doesn’t necessarily have to originate or end at the edge of the grid.

In its essence, the Spangram is kind of like a bigger hint that sums up today’s Strands theme in just a word or two. Since it spans across two sides of the puzzle, solving it early helps you figure out the rest of the theme words and vice versa.

Tips and Tricks for Mastering NYT Strands Puzzles

Solving an NYT Strands puzzle successfully isn’t that hard in itself, but in some cases, the approach might not be as straightforward as it looks. So, here are simple tips and tricks that we suggest you follow to crack the theme words and Spangram for Strands puzzles:

    • Always start at the corners: No two puzzles are the same. But the chances of the Spangram extending to a diagonal form are quite low. So, the best strategy is to find and decrypt relevant words that are at the corners of the grid.
    • Don’t be ashamed to get hints: Sometimes, a theme word could be all you need to solve the entire puzzle. If that requires getting a hint using non-theme words, then that’s the first thing you should do. After all, the point is to have fun and figure this out, like all of us.
    • Think both literally and figuratively: Not all themes may land you in the same sense of thought. Some puzzles may welcome more clever answers that may convey something totally different from their actual meaning.
    • Aim for the Spangram: The Spangram is what splits the Strands board in half. So, figuring it out will help you cross out other potential approaches for a theme. Deciphering even half of the Spangram can get you close to the rest of the answers.

  • Easter procession turns deadly in Gombe as truck accident kills five, sparks violent protests

A joyous Easter procession in Billiri Local Government Area of Gombe State turned into a scene of tragedy when a truck accident claimed the lives of five individuals and left eight others injured, triggering widespread public anger and subsequent violent protests.

The Gombe State Police Command confirmed the devastating incident in a statement released on Monday, stating that a trailer truck, transporting grains from Adamawa State towards Gombe, experienced brake failure. The uncontrolled vehicle then careened into a crowd of Christian worshippers celebrating Easter in Billiri town, also injuring some Muslim bystanders.

DSP Buhari Abdullahi, the police spokesperson, issued the statement on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Gombe State Command, CP Bello Yahaya, confirming the fatalities: “the accident resulted in the deaths of two men and three women.” He further stated that “eight other victims were rushed to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe, and the General Hospital in Billiri, where they are currently receiving treatment and reported to be in stable condition.”

The aftermath of the tragic accident saw tensions escalate rapidly within the town. “Aggrieved youths reportedly set the trailer ablaze, looted shops, and stormed the Billiri Divisional Police Headquarters.” The statement detailed the violence directed at law enforcement: “The protesters threw stones and other objects at officers, resulting in injuries to the Divisional Police Officer and several personnel.”

Investigations are currently ongoing to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding the incident.”

Commissioner Bello Yahaya conveyed his sympathy to the families who lost loved ones and offered prayers for the speedy recovery of those injured. He also made a direct appeal to the community: “He also appealed to members of the public to remain peaceful, law-abiding, and to report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station.”

  • Educating Men on Menstrual Equity

    PeopleImages.com – Yuri A // Shutterstock
Written by Sandra Lindsay for Northwell Health

When a well-read, analytical, and endlessly curious friend recently confessed ignorance to what period poverty is, I became aware of how widespread it is for this problem to be overlooked. You see, my friend is also a brilliant physician. We have rich, open-ended, insightful conversations that always leave me thinking.

I told him about my recent trips to Jamaica, where I met with women undergoing hysterectomies due to severe fibroids. Burdened by debilitating health issues, these women told me how heavy menstrual bleeding had caused them years of emotional and financial stress. They faced a “choice” between purchasing food and other family essentials or purchasing period products. Unable to afford the latter, they missed work, lost jobs, lost social connections, and faced deep isolation. The ripple effects of period poverty had taken a devastating toll on their lives and livelihoods.

I finished sharing my experience when my friend leaned back and, genuinely puzzled, asked, “What is period poverty?”

At first, I thought he was joking. But as I began to explain it to him, I heard both shock and empathy in his voice. I know he considers himself to be a proud, well-informed, and aware “girl dad.”

His response was a reminder of how wide the informational gap is regarding menstrual equity and how deep the roots of this problem run. Silence around menstruation is a social norm fed by a lack of knowledge, systemic failures perpetuated by cultural taboos, and overall societal silence. It has created an unacceptable blind spot.

It’s unacceptable because period poverty affects millions of women and girls globally, including 2 out of 5 women in the United States. In Jamaica, where I grew up, 44% of the female population are affected and 20% of girls miss school because they lack access to period products.

In many societies, menstruation is treated as a private, almost shameful, experience. Stigma discourages open conversations, especially between genders. Schools often fail to include menstrual health in their curriculum and, if they do, content focuses on girls and leaves boys uninformed. Government policies and educational programs often exclude menstrual equity, reinforcing the idea that the issue is not a priority. The added assumption and ignorance around menstruation being solely a “female issue” keeps men from engaging with the topic, further perpetuating the longstanding, painful silence.

After doing his own research, my friend returned to me apologetic and embarrassed. His ignorance was not malicious, but a product of societal shortcomings. Since our conversation, he has become an avid supporter and promoter of my Dignity for All initiative, which addresses period poverty in my homeland and ensures menstruation is not an obstacle to getting an education.

Men need to be more than supporters; they must become allies. Those men who occupy positions of influence and critical decision-making about funding, policy, and education have a responsibility to speak openly about menstruation. I’m asking men to normalize conversations about periods and menstrual poverty to reduce the senseless shame associated with it. Every father, brother, uncle, partner, and friend can help unburden women who may be living with that shame, or with period poverty.

My friend’s transformation from ignorance to advocacy is proof that men can be effective allies when they are informed and empowered. Menstruation is not a “female” issue, but a societal one.

I encourage all men and boys to educate themselves as my friend did so bravely, to ask the women in their lives about their experiences and advocate for menstrual equity in their communities and workplaces. Let’s challenge the silence so we might transform ignorance into action and period poverty into menstrual equity.

  • Fabrizio Romano provides update on Eberechi Eze Manchester United transfer

Manchester United are in the process of planning their summer transfers in a move to shake up the squad and remodel the attack for next season, with Eberechi Eze making the shortlist.

He’s one of seven players listed by United’s recruitment team to improve their attack to bounce back from this season’s disastrous Premier League campaign.

Eze is a proven Premier League attacker, with 29 goals and 23 assists in 141 league matches across the last five seasons for Crystal Palace.

Across his time at Selhurst Park, after moving from QPR for £15 million in 2020, Eze has shown off his versatility, playing on both wings and in attacking midfield, even getting called up to the England squad.

The 26-year-old joined Gareth Southgate’s men for Euro 2024, making three appearances against Denmark, Slovakia and Switzerland.

Now, United are hoping to land Eze’s signing this summer to bring him to Old Trafford, with Fabrizio Romano giving an update on his movement.

Hope for Manchester United to sign Eberechi Eze

Writing for GiveMeSport, Romano confirmed that there is a potential for Eze to move in the summer, although no negotiations have begun.

The reporter wrote: “Yes it’s a possibility. But nothing has been decided yet, in terms of clubs or negotiations. The situation will be one to assess in the summer.”

Whilst this confirms that United haven’t made any moves for the attacking midfielder as of yet, it also gives The Red Devils hope that no other side have beaten them to the punch just yet.

  • Colorado man sentenced for killing longtime friend and burying his remains in crawl space

AURORA, Colo. (TCN) — A 40-year-old man will spend three decades behind bars for killing his friend and burying his body in a crawl space with help from his girlfriend.

According to the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, Haskel Crawford pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in connection with Karl Beaman Jr.’s death. A judge sentenced him on April 17 to 30 years in prison. The term will be served consecutively to a 16-year sentence Crawford is already serving for a separate aggravated robbery case out of Jefferson County.

Beaman’s mother called the Aurora Police Department to report her son missing after she last heard from him in May 2022. She reportedly began working to find her son on her own and started a Facebook page.

According to prosecutors, a tipster sent a private message to the page, claiming Beaman was “buried in an apartment crawl space underneath concrete.” The tipster reportedly said Casie Bock and her boyfriend, Crawford, killed the victim “because they believed he was a ‘police informant’ in a pending criminal case.” The district attorney’s office noted that the defendant and victim had been friends for a long time.

Police searched Bock’s apartment and found Beaman’s decomposed body in a crawl space through her bedroom. Bock later admitted that she helped the defendant place the victim into the crawl space after Crawford killed him. She pleaded guilty to being an accessory to a crime and received a deferred judgement in 2023.

During Crawford’s sentencing hearing, Beaman’s mother said, “He murdered my only child. This plea agreement means my son’s loved ones, our family, and my husband and I are spared from having to listen to the horrific details or seeing graphic images of the brutality that took place. We may never know all the details, but the defendant does. I hope it haunts him every day for the rest of his life like it does me.”

Deputy District Attorney Michele Fuller added, “Mr. Beaman died in the hands of someone he considered his best friend and brother of nearly two decades. We are pleased with the judge’s decision to sentence the defendant to the maximum prison sentence outlined in the plea agreement.”

  • US military reducing number of troops in Syria to under 1,000

The Pentagon announced on Friday that President Donald Trump’s administration is reducing the number of U.S. troops in Syria to “less than a thousand” in the “coming months.”

In a Friday statement released by the Department of Defense, Sean Parnell, chief spokesman for the Pentagon, said, “Recognizing the success the United States has had against ISIS, including its 2019 territorial defeat under President Trump, today the Secretary of Defense directed the consolidation of U.S. forces in Syria under Combined Joint Task Force — Operation Inherent Resolve to select locations in Syria.”

Parnell explained that the “consolidation” of U.S. forces in Syria is a reflection of the “significant steps” the U.S. military has taken “toward degrading ISIS’ appeal and operational capability regionally and globally.”

While the Pentagon did not announce how many U.S. troops would be withdrawn from Syria as part of the reduction of U.S. forces in Syria, The New York Times reported on Thursday that roughly 600 U.S. troops would be withdrawn from Syria under the Trump administration.

“This deliberate and conditions-based process will bring the U.S. footprint in Syria down to less than a thousand U.S. forces in the coming months,” Parnell said in Friday’s statement.

“As this consolidation takes place, consistent with President Trump’s commitment to peace through strength, U.S. Central Command will remain poised to continue strikes against the remnants of ISIS in Syria,” Parnell added. “We will also work closely with capable and willing Coalition partners to maintain pressure on ISIS and respond to any other terrorist threats that arise.”

Despite ordering the reduction of the U.S. military’s presence in Syria, Parnell emphasized that the Department of Defense “continues to maintain a significant amount of capability in the region and the ability to make dynamic force posture adjustments based on evolving security situations on the ground.”

In December, former Pentagon Press Secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder told reporters that the number of U.S. troops in Syria was much higher than the Biden-Harris administration had previously reported. While the Biden-Harris administration had initially reported that approximately 900 U.S. troops had been deployed to Syria, Ryder noted that roughly 2,000 U.S. troops had actually been deployed to Syria.
