UNICROSS Graduate Remanded Over WhatsApp Protest Voice Note

    By Asuquo Cletus

A graduate of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), Martins Eyam, has been arrested and remanded in prison custody following a voice note circulated on WhatsApp in which he criticized the institution’s “No Fees, No Exams” policy and called for a peaceful protest.

Eyam, a recent graduate of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, allegedly shared a voice message across student platforms, condemning the university’s decision to bar students who had not paid their school fees from writing examinations. In the message, he urged students to unite and protest against what he described as an “oppressive and inconsiderate” policy.

Sources within the university confirmed that the voice note reached the office of the Acting Vice Chancellor, who reportedly interpreted the message as an incitement capable of disrupting the peace on campus. Subsequently, the university authorities alerted security operatives, which led to Eyam’s arrest.

According to student sources, Eyam was arrested on Monday, April 14 by operatives of the local security outfit known as Operation Okwok. He was allegedly remanded in prison the same day.

Speaking anonymously, a student leader said, “Martins was invited for a meeting and was told, ‘If you want to be like VeryDarkMan (a known social activist) without money, you will suffer.’ Later that same day, he was arrested and taken to prison.”

In the voice note obtained by Primetime, Eyam appealed for solidarity among students, urging those who had paid their fees to stand with those who could not afford to. He argued that the institution should not prevent students from sitting for exams due to financial hardship and criticized the suspension of student leaders who had opposed the policy.

    Part of his message read:
“Students must learn to know that we all are one, irrespective of your financial buoyancy… If you’ve been able to pay your school fees, another person is struggling… It’s duty bound on the whole entire class… to say, let them write the exam or none of us will write.”

He further criticized the administration’s response to student leaders who opposed the policy, stating: “They stood against the school management… because they were elected to be a voice to the voiceless.”

Eyam concluded by calling on student leaders to engage the school’s management constructively and advocate for better communication and understanding between students and authorities.

When contacted, Acting Vice Chancellor Prof. Francisca Bassey declined to comment directly on the issue, stating, “I will give you the contact of someone that you can talk to on the issue, please.”

The incident has sparked concerns among student groups and human rights advocates over freedom of expression and students’ rights to protest. Efforts to reach the university’s public relations office for an official statement were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.

Endorsement of state, federal lawmakers from Yakurr undermines Gov Otu, APC leadership – Group

    By Our Reporter

A political pressure group, Advocates For Good Governance In Central Senatorial District (AGGCSD), has expressed its disapproval of the purported endorsement of some state and federal lawmakers of Yakurr origin for the 2027 general elections.

The group in a statement on Wednesday 23 April, 2025, said the action of those involve in the charade directly challenges and undermines the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River.

    Below is the statement;

ENDORSEMENT OF ELECTED OFFICIALS OTHER THAN THE GOVERNOR AND DEPUTY, IS NULL AND VOID

“Only the Governor and His Deputy are guaranteed a return ticket ” Alphonsus Eba (State Chairman,  APC CRS)

The attention of well meaning party faithfuls and advocates of good governance of Central Senatorial District has been drawn to a purported gathering to endorse elected members of Yakurr origin at both State and Federal levels.

We wish to state categorically that such desperate attempts to secure goodwill is not only laughable but another purid attempt to undermine the Leadership of the All Progressives Congress, Cross River State.

This attempt calculated to deceive party faithfuls goes to show the utter disregard for the party’s position that, only The Governor and His Deputy are guaranteed a return ticket.

This Position was expressly communicated by the State Party Chairman, in his statewide press conference held on the 1st of April, 2025.  A position that was consolidated at the enlarged Caucus meeting held on the 15th of April,  2025 at the HOGIS Royal Hotel, Calabar.

    Quoting the Chairman verbatim;

“In the Politics of Cross River State, we want to use this opportunity to make it widely known. That anybody who aspires to run for any office apart from the Office of the Governor and deputy Governor of the State, those who are already sitting, they have the right to aspire, those who intend to take over those seats from them, also have the right to aspire, and we have not given automatic seats or ticket to anybody, apart from the Governor and Deputy Governor.”

We therefore admonish the Leadership of Yakurr LGA to be wary of such nefarious antics of those who are selfishly seeking to assume Par with their excellencies by ambushing and cajoling the party leaders to extend  such endorsement to themselves.

It is therefore herein stated that any such endorsement is not only null and void but inconsequential and should be completely disregarded. As it defies not just the prevailing reality but seeks to put our LGA in bad light.

We therefore join our voices with those of reason, and statesmen Iike Chief Obono  Obla who have boldly come out to condemn such fictitious endorsement charades.

Anambra youths accuse community leadership of witch-hunting

    By Ovat Abeng

Youth from Enugwu village, Nnaka community in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, has allegedly accused Engr. Okey Ezeudu-led Ositadinma Development Union (ODU) leadership of witch-hunting development in the area.

The youth in a statement signed and made available to Journalists in Awka on Tuesday by its leader, Comrade Chimemile Okafor, expressed worried over developmental backwardness in the village and Nnaka community as a whole.

According to Okafor in the statement, “The current ODU chairman, Engr Ezeudu had continued to cross limits in the administration of community affairs despite all advices to maintain decorum.

“We the entire youths can no longer bear his excesses and therefore we have decided to convey our advice to the genera! public; maybe he may oblige.

“The election that delivered the current chairman wouldn’t have taken place safe for the promise of amending the 2015 controversial community constitution which was given to our youths on the election day..

“The constitution in question paves way for fraudulent activities orchestrated by community affairs managers and therefore must be amended as agreed during the August 2024 election.

“We are the people at grassroots in this Enugwu village, the future hopes of our community, the recipients of any atrocity committed by the community executive and can at any time spot out anomalies in any of our community administrators just as in this one.

“There has been gross abuse of power by Engr, Okey Ezeudu and we can no longer tolerate such, for instance, he carries out on his own some major policies which are supposed to be deliberated by the general body.

“On execution of each of those policies, he will line up his executive and take pictures to deceive Umu Enugwu like if he carried them along.

“Umu Enugwu have been living in factions but late last year, Umu Enugwu decided to come together in order to pursue a peaceful community which if is understood can propel effective community development and on this ground we jointly elected this Engr. Okey Ezeudu.

“We the youths today speak with one voice and no one, not even Engr. Okey Ezeudu can subject us anymore to further factions. His leadership invariably tends to force Umu Enugwu to continue in factions and our response is; God forbid.

    “We have many exemplary proofs of the above but will just limit ourselves to these few as bellow;

“Engr. Okey Ezeudu ridiculed the entire village when he stopped the Anambra state rehabilitation project in our community health center which made our Local Government Chairman to visit our community for the first time towards end of first quarter of this year and when our Mayor visited for the second time same year to settle an outstanding matter between Efficient Petroleum Limited the makers of Rock Tama spring water, he (Ezeudu insulted the entire village when he admitted before the Mayor that he has not read the lease agreement between Efficient Petroleum Limited and Ositadinma Development Union (ODU), agreement which empowers Rock Tama to carry out general maintenance in the environs and that includes lyi Ofia (the source of Rock Tama water bottling company) from time to time.

“Engr Ezeudu brought shame to the entire community by disobeying the constituted authority; the Orumba North Local Government when he rejected in writing, an invitation by Mayor to come to Ajali, the Council Headquarters. The invitation contained an instruction that Engr. Okey Ezeudu should not disturb the good work of erosion checkmating going on at lyi Ofia section of the town. Although the matter between Efficient Petroleum Limited and ODU eventually was settled by Mayor on his visit and the parties thanked the Mayor as they went home happy. We are happy the matter was resolved during Mayor’s visit. The Mayor ruled that Engr. Okey Ezeudu shall assist in repairing what he demolished at lyi ofia.

“Engr. Okey Ezeudu hired fully armed security personnel of Udogachi from Aguata Local Government Area of the State outside jurisdiction instead of from our Orumba North Local Government which makes him a rascal. A rascal is not fit and cannot be allowed to chair ODU executive. The Udogachi men as a result arrested and detained our youth leader Mr. Ekene Osisioma at Isuofia community.

“Sometime this year also, Engr. Okey Ezeudu, in his gross abuse of powers, drove the nurses at the community health center which made a woman deliver baby at the premises of the health center.

“Engr. Ezeudu without the knowledge of the community, wrote to the Government of Prof. Soludo that governor’s choice of road from Afor Udo which connects Awgbu -Amaokpala road and which was our governor’s promise during his campaign flag off at Enugwu Village, that Enugwu village does not need the road. According to him, the road will course or increase insecurity. We are seeing it as a desperate idea to frustrate the good plans of governor Soludo in our village.

“Now with the above and many unwritten, we the youths of our village plead with  Mayor to help our community which sincerely wants our community development, in any way possible to bring about sanity.

“We therefore demand that Engr. Okey Ezeudu be commuted with a caretaker committee in order to avoid breakdown of law and order which may course bloodshed in our Enugwu village community,” Comrade Okafor commended.

Representing the management of the Good Samaritan Home, Rev. Sister Mary Claudia, expressed deep gratitude to NAWOJ for their thoughtful gesture towards the home.

“We are truly thankful for your love and generosity. It gives us strength and encouragement,” she said.

She however, noted the enormous challenges faced by the home, especially in caring for the aged without steady support. “We need the help of kind hearted individuals and institutions. The burden is heavy, and we can’t carry it alone. The elderly here rely on our collective compassion.”

Rev. Sister Claudia concluded by urging society to continue showing up for its most vulnerable members.

  • Shareholders Approve Cancellation Of 1.9 Billion Nigerian Breweries Shares

Shareholders of Nigerian Breweries Plc have approved the cancellation of 1.9 billion unissued ordinary shares following the company’s recently concluded ₦599.1bn rights issue.

The resolution was passed at the company’s 79th Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Lagos, marking a significant milestone in the restructuring of its share capital.

The cancelled shares, which were not taken up during the rights issue, were removed in compliance with Section 124 of the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) 2020 and Regulation 13 of the Companies Regulations 2021.

With this action, the company’s issued share capital has been revised downward to ₦15.49bn, now divided into 30,983,026,920 ordinary shares of 50 kobo each.

Prior to the cancellation, the company had created 22.61 billion additional ordinary shares, raising the total share capital to ₦16.44bn as part of the capital restructuring strategy for the ₦599.1bn rights issue approved by shareholders at the AGM held on April 26, 2024.

In a resolution ratified at the 79th AGM, shareholders formally endorsed all actions taken by the Board of Directors under the authority granted at the previous AGM.

This included the creation of the new shares and subsequent cancellation of the 1.9 billion units not subscribed to.

The capital adjustment forms part of the company’s broader strategy to strengthen its balance sheet and support long-term financial sustainability.

The management noted that the rights issue and related changes are crucial for reducing debt, improving liquidity, and positioning Nigerian Breweries for future growth amid a challenging macroeconomic environment.

In addition to the capital restructuring, shareholders also approved amendments to Article 81 of the company’s Articles of Association, granting the Board of Directors greater flexibility in securing financing.

Under the amended provision, directors may borrow funds up to two and a half times the paid-up share capital and reserves, excluding temporary bank loans, without further shareholder approval.

The amendment, however, includes safeguards: any lender or third party dealing with the company is not required to confirm if the borrowing threshold is observed, although debts incurred beyond the limit would only be invalid if the lender had prior knowledge that the limit had been exceeded.

  • San Jose State’s Nick Nash, triple crown or not, a likely Day 3 NFL draft pick

SAN JOSE — It was one last hurrah for Nick Nash on his home field, where he became one of the most prolific receivers in the history of San Jose State football.

Nash went through the paces on his pro day last month with some of his Spartans teammates, catching everything thrown his way as usual.

“One last time for us to get together,” Nash said.

As a senior, Nash won the NCAA’s triple crown, leading the nation in receptions (104), yards (1,382) and touchdowns (16). So it’s clear Nash can do the three things that are most important in the NFL — get open, catch the ball and score touchdowns.

If only it were that simple.

When the NFL Draft begins with the first round Thursday, Nash’s phone will be silent. Barring a major surprise, it will remain that way on Friday through the second and third rounds. Finally on Day 3, Nash will receive the call that he hopes will change his life anywhere from the fourth through seventh rounds.

Twenty-six teams showed up to see Nash and some of his college teammates work out at CEFCU Stadium last month. Nash knows the draft process is ultra-critical, and he plans on being patient.

“It’s politics. It’s how it works,” Nash said after his workout. “I’m not really worried about the outside noise. I’m just trying to focus on myself and showing I belong at the next level.”

Nash sat out the Spartans’ 41-39 loss to South Florida in the Hawaii Bowl to get a jump on the NFL Scouting Combine. He trained at Bommarito Performance in Miami to enhance physical attributes other than being able to exploit holes in a defense and convert first downs.

“Got me where I needed to be,” Nash said.

Nash’s 40-yard dash time was an adequate 4.57 with a 34-inch vertical leap and a 10 foot, 3 inch broad jump. He measured at just over 6-foot-2 and 203 pounds. It won’t be enough for a first-round draft day call like previous triple-crown winners DeVonta Smith of Alabama (No. 10 overall to Philadelphia in 2020) or Michael Crabtree (No. 10 to the 49ers in 2009).

A fourth triple-crown winner, Jerreth Sterns of Western Kentucky, never did get drafted in 2021 after catching 150 passes for 1,902 yards and 17 touchdowns. He signed as an undrafted free agent with Tampa Bay, didn’t stick, had a cup of coffee on the Rams practice squad, and is now property of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League.

Nash just wants a chance, and he knows what NFL teams are looking for. He’s been invited to the 49ers’ local Pro Day on April 9. The 49ers traded Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk isn’t expected to play until the season is underway after a torn ACL.

“I think getting off press coverage is going to be the biggest thing,” Nash said. “From the coaches that I’ve talked to, that’s the biggest transition for all receivers. I can do it, but it’s obviously something I still have to work on.”

Now that the measuring and timing of the combine is done, Nash believes he can sell an NFL team an obvious truth — that nothing matters more for a wide receiver than finding open areas, securing the ball and getting in the end zone.

Nash came to San Jose State as a quarterback before moving to receiver in 2022. So he understands route concepts and how things work in the passing game.

    Karl Mondon/Bay Area News Group

Nick Nash (3) of Sam Jose State scores one of his 16 touchdowns in 2024 against Wyoming at CEFCU Stadium.

“I would say the ability to get open, high-point balls and my aggressiveness toward catching it will be the biggest thing,” he said. “My mind is going to be a big key for me, showing I can learn an offense quickly and produce at a high level.”

San Jose State quarterback Walker Eget is admittedly biased. Nash was both his roommate, golf partner and favorite receiver and the thought of him lasting until Day 3 is a head-scratcher.

“It blows my mind,” Eget said. “I think he will be one of the best players in the NFL right away. I think people don’t know the amount of knowledge he has and the understanding of the game he he has. He’s still young at the position compared to guys who have played it their whole life.”

There are plenty of examples of receivers whose skill at catch the ball has superseded the physical attributes of running and jumping.

The 49ers got their leading receiver in 2024, Jauan Jennings, in the seventh round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

The Los Angeles Rams got Cooper Kupp in the third round, and all he did was win the NFL’s version of the triple crown in 2021. Kupp is now with Seattle, in part because the Rams found another gem in Puka Nacua of Brigham Young in the fifth round in 2023 (177 overall) after 19 other wide receivers were drafted.

For what it’s worth, Nacua’s 40-yard dash time at the combine was 4.57 — the same as Nash.

“I feel like I can play fast, I can play slower, I can play big and small,” Nash said. “I think I’m pretty versatile in that way. I’d say the closest comp would be Nacua and Kupp, and it would be cool to end up with someone like that and learn from some of those guys.”

Field Yates covers the NFL and the draft for ESPN and likes what he sees even if he believes Nash will last until the third day.

“I like Nick a lot,” Yates said on a conference call. “He has got so much nuance and craft to his game. The guy is operating at a higher level than any defensive back that tried to cover him unsuccessfully last year.”

Yates sees Nash as being similar to Marques Colston, a former seventh-round draft pick out of Hofstra who caught 711 passes for 9,759 yards and 72 touchdowns in 10 seasons as a perfect offensive fit for coach Sean Payton and quarterback Drew Brees.

With a bigger body than a slot corner and agile enough to get away from linebackers and safeties, Yates sees a possible future as an inside slot receiver.

Jordan Reid, another ESPN draft analyst, cited Nash’s moderate physical gifts as a negative in a draft sense.

“He put up some gaudy numbers last year. They pushed the ball to him a whole bunch and he put up ridiculous numbers,”  Reid said. “I think fifth or sixth is a fair projection. The production is off the charts. It’s just a matter of how comfortable are you with his athleticism?”

Nash doesn’t take the critiques personally and smiles when it’s suggested that catching the ball is actually down the list when it comes to scouting NFL receivers.

“There’s not much I can do about it,” Nash said. “I’ll leave that to the analysts and scouts. They get paid to do it so I’m sure know what they’re doing.”
