Astros’ Bregman delivers on Uvalde HR request vs. A’s

By Staff reports

The A’s losing streak reached eight games Sunday, but a nice story came out of the game.

The Astros chartered 10 buses to bring 500 family members and friends of the victims of the May 24 mass shooting at a Uvalde elementary school to the team’s 6-3 win over the A’s Sunday in Houston.

The group attended a pregame event where manager Dusty Baker and players Jose Altuve, Alex Bregman and Lance McCullers spoke and answered questions.

A little girl who was at the school at the time of the shooting didn’t have a question for Altuve, but rather a request. Wearing a shirt that read “Team Altuve,” she asked the star second baseman to hit a home run for her. But before Altuve ever got to the plate, Bregman delivered on the request, smacking a first-inning home run off A’s starter Cole Irvin.

Altuve, for his part, had a two-RBI double in the next inning that stretched the Houston lead to 4-0.
