Lucas Digne is set to join Aston Villa after the Villains agreed a 25 million pound transfer fee with Everton.
Several teams have shown an interest in signing Digne during this January transfer window, including Chelsea, Newcastle United and Inter, but the Frenchman will join Villa once he undergoes a medical in Birmingham on Wednesday.
The capture of Digne comes just days after the arrival of Philippe Coutinho, who has joined Villa on loan until the end of the season, with an option to buy included for 33.3 million pounds.
An exciting player
Digne is an experienced defender with many major honours in Europe. He was part of the Paris Saint Germain and Barcelona squads who collected 12 trophies between them during his time at each club.
He joined Everton in the summer of 2018 and has been one of the Toffees‘ best players in recent years, recording the most assists since joining the club.
However, Digne has been out of favour at Everton this season after he fell out with Rafa Benitez over tactics. In fact, the 28-year-old has not started a Premier League match since December 1, having expressed his desire to leave the club in the January transfer window.
Everton moved quickly to replace Digne, as they brought in Vitaliy Mykolenko from Dynamo Kyiv for 21.5 million pounds.
A new-look Villa
Although Villa are currently only 14th in the Premier League, there is a positive mood at the club.
Digne is expected to be the team’s first-choice left-back, taking over from Matt Targett in that position. Villa now have two very strong left-backs in their squad who could push each other on.
If Coutinho can revive his career and find the form which saw him become a star at Liverpool, Steven Gerrard‘s Villa could become a major threat.
As long as there are no hiccups, Digne and Coutinho could feature in Villa‘s clash against Manchester United on Saturday.
