Ashie Osor of Nigerian Chronicles Newspaper emerges NUJ Financial Secretary

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Cross River State Council, has approved the nomination of Chief Ashie Osor of the Nigerian Chronicles Newspaper as its new Financial Secretary following a bye-election process.

The nomination was ratified during the Union’s December 2025 Congress, which was presided over by the Council’s Vice Chairman, Comrade Sunny Inah. The appointment fills a vacant position within the Council leadership, ensuring the Union remains fully functional ahead of the new year.

Ashie Osor is also the Chronicle’s Government House Correspondent. Before his recent elevation to a member of the state Council of NUJ, he was the Secretary, NUJ Chronicle Chapel.

A communique issued at the close of the Congress stated that the decision was “In line with the Union Constitution for a bye Election to fill a vacant position in the Council leadership.”

Beyond the election, the Congress deliberated on key state issues, extending gratitude to the state government. The Union “Appreciates the Cross River State Government under the leadership of the Governor H.E Senator Bassey Otu for the ongoing urban renewal and beautification programme leading to the upgrading and resurfacing of some major roads in the Calabar metropolis especially Carnival route, to give Citizens the reason to celebrate the yuletide.”

The NUJ also called for heightened security during the festive season, commending the current synergy among agencies while pushing for increased operational efforts. The Congress called on security agencies “to sustain their collaboration and to step up their surveillance and other operations within and outside the state capital to nip in the bud miscreant attacks and activities, especially this festive period.”

The Union addressed housing concerns, urging the state government to act decisively on regulating property agents. “Congress appeals to the Cross River State Government to ensure speedy implementation of the banning of the operations of property agents whose extortionists activities have led to the violation of tenants’ rights.”

Finally, the Union appealed to the Port-Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED) for better service, urging them “to allow Uninterrupted Power Supply During the Yuletide.”
