According to David McDonnell of The Mirror, up to 12 players could be on their way out as part of a major overhaul planned by Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s newly established football operations team. This drastic restructure aims to rejuvenate the club, which has struggled to maintain its former glory.
Despite limitations imposed by financial fair play regulations, the club plans to boost its purchasing power through these player sales, enabling a much-needed squad revitalisation.
As per the report, under the scrutiny of new technical director Jason Wilcox, and in anticipation of Dan Ashworth’s arrival from Newcastle as the new director of football, every position within the team is being reevaluated. The defense could see significant changes with possible exits for Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof, and Harry Maguire, despite Maguire’s proven importance during recent squad shortages.
The midfield also appears poised for transformation, with potential departures of Casemiro, who has failed to replicate his initial impact, and Christian Eriksen. Additionally, Sofyan Amrabat is expected to return to Fiorentina after an unsuccessful loan spell.
Changes extend to the attack as well, where the club might sever ties with Antony, a costly misfire at £85 million, and Marcus Rashford, whose form has drastically declined following a previously impressive season. Jadon Sancho, currently on loan at Borussia Dortmund after a fallout with management, and Anthony Martial, whose contract expires this summer, are also likely on their way out.
However, the core of the team including Andre Onana, Lisandro Martinez, Kobbie Mainoo, Bruno Fernandes, and Rasmus Hojlund will remain intact. Defenders Luke Shaw and Diogo Dalot, alongside younger talents like Alejandro Garnacho, Willie Kwambala, and Mason Mount, who has spent much of his debut season sidelined, are also seen as vital to the club’s future.
The report states that, this restructuring marks the first phase of an ambitious project under Ratcliffe’s leadership, aiming not just for immediate improvements but for sustained success capable of eventually repositioning United as title contenders.
