Crawley Town announced on Monday that they’ve completed the loan signing of Mazeed Ogungbo from Arsenal for the 2022/23 season.

Arsenal lost youth coaches Kevin Betsy and Dan Micciche to Crawley Town this summer, but the one upside of that move was that the Gunners now have good connections with the League Two club.

Betsy was evidently keen to bolster his squad with a player he rated highly whilst working with the Arsenal academy, with Ogungbo regularly starting for the u23s last season.

Speaking after the confirmation of the loan move, Betsy was quick to sing Ogungbo’s praises.

“We have managed to secure a really talented young player in Mazeed, an amazing character,” Betsy said.

“A very good defender who is quick and has the ability to play in three positions. He is a great addition to the squad and will add competition for places in the back line.”

Crawley opened their League Two campaign with a 1-0 defeat to Carlisle, so they’ll be hoping that centre-back Ogungbo can boost their chances of clean sheets over the coming weeks.

As well as acting as a central defender, Ogungbo is also capable at left-back or left-wing-back, so he’s a great option to have in the squad.

That versatility should make him a good option for Mikel Arteta’s side eventually, particularly given his fondness for left-footed centre-backs on the left.

For now, Ogungbo needs to gain some experience in senior football, and this loan is an opportunity to do that.
