Football.London report that Arsenal are one of several clubs interested in Cody Gakpo this summer. Gakpo is keen to play in the Premier League, though his priority is regular minutes ahead of the World Cup.
Gakpo is reportedly one name on a list of potential wide options for Arsenal, but Mikel Arteta is a big fan of the player.
This update follows an interesting comment from The Athletic’s James McNicholas on the Arseblog podcast.
“I don’t think Zinchenko is the end of Arsenal’s business,” McNicholas said. “I think they will sign at least one other player.
“If I had to put a position on it, I think it will be a winger. I think it will be a Raphinha alternative.”
Whether Gakpo counts as a Raphinha alternative is up for debate. He’s certainly a winger who has scored plenty of goals over the last year, but he’s right-footed and more often plays on the left-hand side.
Whilst Raphinha would likely have acted as an alternative to Bukayo Saka on the right-hand side, it will be more difficult to use Gakpo in that role.
The Daily Mail previously reported that Arsenal had held talks with Cody Gakpo over a summer transfer, expected to cost between £30m and £40m this summer.
Amid all the speculation surrounding his future, Gakpo responded in May that it’s all still up in the air.
“Anything can happen this summer,” Gakpo said. “I will now calmly compare all the options and see what is best for me. Staying another year is also an option.
“It would be a shame if I went somewhere where I wouldn’t get a game at all and I could miss the World Cup. I’ll keep that in mind.”
David Ornstein reported that though Gakpo’s recent contract extension didn’t contain a release clause, Gakpo has an understanding that PSV will cooperate with suitable summer offers.
Ornstein added that this has led admirers such as Arsenal, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Liverpool to start holding serious conversations about a move for the player. Though there hasn’t been much progress so far.
The 23-year-old left-winger scored 21 goals and assisted 15 in 47 appearances last season.
