You’d have to be actively trying not to hear about all the exciting new content headed to Mortal Kombat 1 as Tuesday’s Khaos Reigns update promises new characters, new kill moves, new stages, a new story expansion, and more. One foundational aspect of Mortal Kombat 1, however, has been conspicuously absent from any and all Season 2 announcements thus far.
Kameo fighters, secondary assist characters that widely define the MK1 gameplay experience, have not been announced in any capacity for the Khaos Reigns update. Franchise co-creator Ed Boon addressed this absence in a recent interview with Polygon, setting the record straight for fans.
Season 1 of Mortal Kombat 1 added the contents of Kombat Pack 1 over time, and this included six new DLC characters and five additional Kameo fighters: Ferra, Johnny Cage, Khameleon, Mavado, and Tremor.
When Season 2 was revealed in a similar manner, six DLC characters were indeed announced, but they were not accompanied by any tag team partners. Polygon asked Boon directly about this, and he was quick to quell any worries that the Kameo roster might be complete.
“To my fault, I guess I never really communicated it clearly outside of the team, but yes,” said Boon the the question of whether or not more Kameos would be en route.
“To me, it would feel a little bit weird to suddenly just stop doing them, with as many as we have in the game now. I think that the mix-and-matches are interesting. I really love seeing players [coming up with] crazy combos with this Kameo and this main fighter. I think that just keeps things really interesting,” he finishes.
It’s admittedly an odd omission given the crucial role Kameos play in Mortal Kombat 1, but fans can rest assured that we have not seen the end of the assist roster.
If patterns in Season 1 are anything to go by, Kameos will usually launch alongside main roster DLC additions. Cyrax, Sektor, and Noob Saibot are all slated to launch simultaneously along with the Khaos Reigns update on September 24, however, and with no word on Kameos yet we’re somewhat doubtful these three will bring any assist partners with them.
Guest DLC fighters for Season 2 include Ghostface, Conan the Barbarian, and the T-1000, and information on their respective releases remains elusive for now, so it could be that Kameos come with them.
We may get answers as soon as Tuesday’s Khaos Reigns launch, and we would never put it past Boon and his team at NetherRealm Studios to include unannounced goodies in such a large expansion. For now, pass some time by sharing which characters you’d most like to see return as Kameos in the comments.
Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns is set for launch on September 24. It will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch.
