November 12, 2024 BRONX, New York – A transformer explosion and fire along the tracks of an Amtrak substation halted trains and caused all day service suspensions on Tuesday in NYC.
FDNY Firefighters responded to a major transformer explosion where officials say a high-voltage feeder cable servicing the train line erupted into flames and power was shut off.
Travel was disrupted between New York Penn Station and New Haven, Connecticut due to the heavy track fire that also extended to a nearby warehouse, and multiple vehicles.
Fire crews battled the 3-Alarm blaze that caused rail service in both directions to be suspended for the remainder of the day.
Fire officials said the explosion happened along Amtrak train route on Bronxdale Avenue near East Tremont Avenue in Parkchester around 2 p.m., in the Bronx
“I thought we was at war or something, like someone dropped a bomb.” We talked with an area resident who was left startled after the loud explosion. The witness said he had never seen anything like that in his life.
Travelers in NYC were advised to use the Metro-North Railroad services and board at Grand Central Station where Amtrak ticket holders were being honored.
