Alvaro Fernandez has been enjoying a great run of form since moving to Benfica this summer.
After failing to make a single senior appearance for Manchester United, Fernandez was sold for €6 million.
Most of the young defender’s time with United was spent on loan, with stints at Preston North End, Granada and Benfica before the Portuguese side decided they wanted him permanently.
However, the Spanish star has become the starting left-back for the Portuguese side. His recent run of form has attracted a lot of attention from Europe’s top teams, including his former club.
United cleverly included a buy-back clause when agreeing to the deal, and are now looking at re-signing the defender.
The interest comes as United still face injury woes at left-back, with Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia only recently starting individual training on the grass at Carrington.

The Red Devils are also looking for a long-term replacement for Shaw, with Fernandez potentially fitting the bill.
Alvaro Fernandez responds to potential Old Trafford return
Speaking after Benfica’s Champions League game with Feyenoord, Fernandez told Sport TV, via Record: “I only think about Benfica. I’m only focused here.”
He continued: “I’ll try to keep up the same level, try to help the team as much as possible. I’m just another player on the team.”
It’s understood that if United do trigger the buy-back clause, they’ll only need to part with €16 million, however will have made a loss of €10 million on their own star.
