Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has congratulated the players and officials of Ibom Angels Football Club for their outstanding success in the Women’s Second Division Football League Championship.
The team’s impressive campaign concluded with a crucial 2-0 victory over Osun Babes in Calabar, securing their promotion to the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL).
Governor Eno, represented by the Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Sir Monday Uko, hosted a celebratory reception for the team on Monday at the Uyo Township Stadium. The Governor commended the players for their resilience and dedication, describing them as exemplary representatives of his ARISE agenda, which focuses on youth empowerment and productivity.
“The state is proud of your achievement. You have not only fulfilled our expectations but also brought great honor to Akwa Ibom. We are committed to nurturing talents like yours to ensure that our youth can thrive independently,” Uko stated on behalf of the Governor.
He further revealed that the administration is set to inaugurate a 5,000-job program aimed at empowering vulnerable youths, highlighting the government’s dedication to youth-focused initiatives.
In addition to congratulating the team, Governor Eno announced a financial reward and other incentives to support the club. He encouraged the players to maintain their excellent performance as they prepare for the upcoming 2024/2025 NWFL season.
Head Coach Edwin Okon and team captain Abasiofon Uwah expressed deep gratitude for the Governor’s continuous support, especially given the country’s economic challenges. They promised to remain focused and strive for even greater success in the top-flight league.
The reception was graced by prominent figures, including the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Lady Rose Bassey, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Youth Matters, Mr. Iniobong Akpan, Director of Sports, Mrs. Brigid Otton, and Akwa Ibom State Football Association Chairman, Mr. Samuel Umoh.
