Erik ten Hag has failed to replicate the success he achieved with Manchester United last season and as such, there are some speculations on him keeping his job after the end of the season.
In fact, most of the reports have new ownership INEOS opting for a new manager, which will leave ten Hag virtually a free agent.
According to a report by The Mirror, Ajax are considering being a safety net for the Dutch manager in the event that INEOS decide to replace him come the summer.
According to the report, Ajax, who have been in a similar results crisis as United, have drawn up a list of potential managerial appointments and that list includes Erik ten Hag.
The Dutch club’s new chief executive Alex Kroes has been tasked with finding a replacement for stand-in coach John van ’t Schip at the end of a season which saw the Amsterdam club stranded at the bottom of the Eredivisie table after a shocking start to the campaign.
The report effectively means they are indeed considering offering ten Hag something of an escape route from the challenging experience that has been this season.
Erik ten Hag has previously guided the Dutch team to 3 successive league titles, as well as famously almost getting them to a Champions League final in 2019.
According to the report, Liverpool’s assistant manager Pep Lijnders is favourite to land the job.
He remains the most realistic option with ambitions of landing a senior role, as he too is set to leave Anfield along with his boss Jürgen Klopp.
Ajax are however not willing to pay any compensation fee for a manager, which rules out the possibility of them appointing a manager who is still on contract.
Ajax will be waiting to see if INEOS decide to keep ten Hag on or not, to make a decision on pouncing on their former manager or not.
