Afcon 2024, Nigeria draws Equatorial Guinea, Ghana lost to Cape Verde

Garry Rodrigues’ stoppage time goal gave the Blue Sharks of Cape Verde all three points against the Black Stars of Ghana on Sunday in their AFCON Group B opener.

The Blue Sharks had gone ahead in the first half thanks to Jamiro Monteiro’s goal and took their lead into halftime.

Alexander Djiku, however, pulled an equalizer in the 56th minute to revive hopes for the Black Stars of Ghana.

And when the game was looking to end in a stalemate, Rodrigues stepped up to the plate to score a late winner that took Cape Verde to the top of Group B.

In another development, Nigeria’s Super Eagles faced Equatorial Guinea in their opening fixture of the 2023 African Cup of Nations campaign in Ivory Coast.

Despite dominating possession in the first half, Nigeria struggled to capitalize on their chances, allowing Equatorial Guinea to take the lead. Victor Osimhen, however, managed to level the score with a header from Lookman’s cross, salvaging a point for Nigeria.

Nigeria currently sits on the third rung of the group A leader while Ivory Coast and  Equatorial Guinea are on the first and second rung of the table respectively.
