Human Rights activist, Deji Adeyanju has condemned what he called outrageous allocation of N45bn for a new Secretariat complex in Bayelsa State.
The government of Douye Diri had announced the award of the contract for the construction of the Secretariat during the State Executive Council meeting, stating it was in fulfilment of workers’ demand.
Diri said the new secretariat will accommodate workers stating that “When we had workers day, that’s one of the demands of workers of Bayelsa State.”
But Adeyanju in a statement on Saturday described it as “extravagant expenditure” that is “unacceptable, especially considering the state’s financial constraints and pressing developmental needs.”
He therefore urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to promptly investigate the “contract award, ensuring transparency and accountability in the utilisation of public funds.”
He said the people of Bayelsa State deserve to know how their resources are being allocated.
“This lavish spending,” he said, “undermines the trust between the government and its citizens.”
Consequently, he called on the EFCC to “investigate the contract award process for potential irregularities.”
He urged the EFCC to ensure there’s compliance with the public procurement regulations.
The activities further called the EFCC to safeguard Nigeria’s financial integrity and hold public officials accountable for their actions.
