Abia: Mayors Pledge Support for Revived School Sports Program

Some mayors in Abia State have pledged their support for Governor Alex Otti’s plan to revive sports in secondary schools in the state.

Mayor of Umunneochi, Mr Ndubuisi Ike and his Isiukwuatto counterpart, Marshal Chinwendu Onyike (rtd) have declared their unequivocal support for the Governor’s efforts to revitalize school sports in the state.

Their commitment came during a ceremony held on Thursday, where the “Torch of Unity” signifying the commencement of the program was received by both LGAs.

Local government chairmen are called mayors in Abia State.

Mayor Ike lauded Governor Otti’s efforts to bring total development to the state, emphasizing the dual benefits of physical infrastructure and mental development fostered by sports. He said Umunneochi was privileged to host the competition and urged students to seize the opportunity to excel.

Dr. Anyikwa Ken Kenzie, representing the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, assured the LGA of further celebrations as Governor Otti’s development plans for Abia unfold across all sectors.

Mayor Onyike expressed deep appreciation for the Governor’s revival of school sports, promising full support from Isiukwuatto. He pledged to ensure active participation and potential victories, highlighting the program’s role in talent discovery.

Comrd. Jerry Basil Ude, representing the Commissioner, elaborated on Governor Otti’s good plans for sports development. He encouraged parents to actively support their wards’ participation in the program, emphasizing its alignment with the Governor’s vision.

The competition dates were officially announced as February 1st to 14th, 2024, setting the stage for exciting athletic competitions across Abia.

Representatives from both LGAs expressed their sincere appreciation to Governor Otti and his administration for bringing the Torch of Unity to their communities. Dr. Ugochukwu Anunobi, Sports Organizing Secretary for Umunneochi LGA, and Nduka Nwosu, his counterpart in Isiukwuatto, assured their full participation in the upcoming competition
