The President of the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation, Dr Ibrahim Abdul has called on corporate firms to support weightlifting to help boost the development of the sport in the country.
He is confident that with the right support Nigerian weightlifters are capable of making the country proud at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Nigeria’s best weightlifting performance at the Olympics, (two medals – a silver, and a bronze was at the 2000 and 2008 Olympics).
He said: “Our athletes have the talent and determination to compete at the highest levels.
“However, they need the right resources—training facilities, international exposure, and financial support to fully realize their potential. Corporate sponsorship is the key to ensuring our athletes have everything they need to succeed.”
Abdul also revealed that lack of access to facilities, funding is affecting the weightlifters.
He said: “Corporate sponsorship will take the financial burden off both the athletes and the federation. When businesses step in to support our athletes, it allows us to focus on what truly matters: training, competing and winning. It’s a partnership that benefits everyone, as it ensures our athletes can compete at the highest level and, ultimately, bring home medals for Nigeria.
“We are looking for forward-thinking companies that are ready to invest in the future of Nigeria’s athletes. Sponsorship is a long-term investment, not just in the athlete, but in the growth of Nigerian sports and the international reputation of corporate sponsors.
“If we want to see more Nigerian weightlifters winning gold at international championships, we need sustained investment in their development. Corporate sponsorship will provide the necessary foundation for our athletes to succeed.”
Abdul promised that the federation will continue to churn out talented weightlifters that will make the country proud in international competitions.
He concluded: “We have the talent; we have the determination. Now, we need the support. Together, we can build a legacy of champions who will make Nigeria proud on the global stage.”
