The abductors of 20 medical students of the Universities of Jos and Maiduguri have demanded a ransom of N50m.
Recall that the students were travelling to the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students (FECAMDS) annual convention in Enugu when they were ambushed around 5:30 pm in the Otukpo area on Thursday.
The victims were from the University of Maiduguri and the University of Jos.
Second Vice President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Dr. Ushakuma Anenga, who confirmed this to journalists, said that the abductors of the medical students have opened negotiations with their families and have demanded N50m before the students will be released.
“The kidnappers have given phones to the students to make calls and also send messages to their loved ones. So, they have been calling their parents, fellow students, and friends. We hope to see them return soon,” he stated.
Also confirming the report, the President of the Benue Medical Student Association (NMA), Samuel Oche, said that he spoke with one of the kidnapped students on Friday.
“As of yesterday, we still had access to them. We tried to know if we could still contact them, and one of them, Boniface, confirmed to me on call that the kidnappers were asking for N50m collectively,” Oche said on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun on Saturday, ordered the prompt deployment of a substantial number of human and technical resources to augment the manpower of the Benue State Command, and ensure swift rescue of the medical students.
