A look at how Mortal Kombat's Ermac has changed over the last almost 30 years

This week (and just this morning), fans were finally given the chance to see Ermac at full capacity in Mortal Kombat 1. A new gameplay trailer was just released that provides an extensive look at what the upcoming DLC character can do in the latest entry in the long-running fighting game series.

Ermac made his debut back in 1995 with the release of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, and he will be coming back to join the fight once again in Mortal Kombat 1 on April 16. A lot has changed over the last almost 30 years, and UncannyCarlos on Twitter has put together an excellent infographic that shows just how much Ermac has changed during that time too.

Ermac is one of the classic Mortal Kombat ninjas and remains a popular character today. The traditionally red palette swap ninja uses telekinesis to lift and slam opponents around the stage during kombat.

This legacy fighter has been in a slew of Mortal Kombat games over the last 30 years or so, including making an appearance in the action-adventure spinoff title, Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks. Here with UncannyCarlos’ infographic, we see every iteration of Ermac starting from 1995’s Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 all the way to his newest design in Mortal Kombat 1.

Seeing all of the versions of Ermac laid out in front of us in order of when they appeared, we see that the character was given a design for the 3D era of Mortal Kombat and kept the same look the entire time. Essentially, he went from his original sprite design in UMK3 to his 3D design in Mortal Kombat: Deception and kept it through Mortal Kombat: Armageddon.

With his newest look in Mortal Kombat 1, Ermac has more of an undead look to him. When we first saw him last year, Ermac’s base design saw him without a face mask which revealed a withered face with glowing eyes underneath.

After some not so positive feedback on his look, NetherRealm Studios have added a face mask to the legacy ninja that we got to see in action in his new gameplay trailer. With this added change, Ermac looks pretty great in Mortal Kombat 1, but which design over the last 30 years is your favorite?
