Sir Jim Ratcliffe recently cut Sir Alex Ferguson’s £2.16 million a year contract for his role as a club ambassador.

Manchester United are desperate to redirect their financial future to become more sustainable.

Over the summer, United narrowly avoided Premier League Profit and Sustainability (PSR) breaches.

Thanks to a Covid grant and lenience for the costs incurred during Sir Jim’s minority stake purchase of the club, United were able to dodge any violations.

Now, the exact finanical details of United’s busy summer transfer business have been revealed.

With multiple heavy burdens removed off their wage bill, the club have cut around £34m from their annual salary expenditure.

14 players left United and five new players were purchased in last summer’s transfer window – here is how this business affected United’s finances.

Departures:

Raphael Varane – £340,000 per week,

Jadon Sancho – £300,000 per week – of which Chelsea are paying around £250,000,

Anthony Martial – £250,000 per week,

Donny van de Beek – £120,000 per week,

Aaron Wan-Bissaka – £90,000 per week,

Sofyan Amrabat, Brandon Williams, Scott McTominay and Mason Greenwood – between £50,000-£65,000 per week,

Facundo Pellistri – £27,000 per week,

Willy Kambwala, Alvaro Carreras, Omari Forson and Hannibal Mejbri – less than £10,000 per week.

In total, United saved just under £70m in yearly salary expenses from these 14 players leaving.

Arrivals:

Matthijs de Ligt – £195,000 per week,

Noussair Mazraoui – £135,000 per week,

Manuel Ugarte – £120,000 per week,

Leny Yoro – £115,000,

Joshua Zirkzee – £105,000 per week.

With these big arrivals, which cost around £180m in transfer fees, United added over an extra £35m to their wage bill.

In total, this works out to be roughly £34m saved in annual salary expenditure.

With some so-called ‘dead wood’ leaving the club and their high wages heading out of the door with them, this transfer business from Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his crew is certainly shrewd.
