Abia Assembly Calls On FG To Rehabilitate Ikot Ekpene-Umudike, Olokoro Roads

The Abia State House of Assembly has called on the Federal Government to hasten the rehabilitation of the Ikot Ekpene-Umudike Road.

The House in a resolution passed today during its Plenary meeting in Umuahia, unanimously urged the State Government to rehabilitate the Olokoro-Amaoba Road to help decongest the heavy traffic along the Ikot Ekpene-Umudike Road, pending the Federal Government’s total reconstruction of the road.

This decision followed a motion sponsored by Hon. Boniface Isienyi, representing Ikwuano State Constituency. In his motion, Isienyi stressed the economic importance of rehabilitating the Olokoro-Amaoba Road, which would serve as an alternative route to the Ikot Ekpene-Umudike Road and alleviate the hardships faced by commuters.

“My constituents and those of Umuahia South, who are predominantly farmers, experience immense pain and suffering while transporting their farm produce to the urban city of Umuahia for sale, due to the heavy traffic along the Ikot Ekpene-Umudike Road.

“The rehabilitation of Olokoro-Omoba Road will ease the suffering of my constituents, students, and staff of federal establishments along the road, as well as other daily commuters,” Hon. Isienyi said.

After contributions from other members in support of the motion, Speaker Emmanuel Emeruwa granted Isienyi’s prayers, expressing confidence in the state’s ongoing efforts to improve rural roads.

“I know that the state has been doing a lot of work on rural roads, and I’m sure they will soon address areas like the Olokoro-Omoba Roads. We call on the Federal Government to expedite action on the Ikot Ekpene-Umudike Road, and we urge the state to address the Olokoro-Omoba Roads as well. All in favor say aye. Aye. Ayes have it,” Emeruwa declared.

THE WHISTLER reports that the continuation and consideration of the report on H.A.B 17: The Abia State Rural Access Roads Agency Bill, 2024, sponsored by Majority Leader Hon. Uchenna Okoro, was deferred to a future legislative session. The House adjourned its plenary session, set to reconvene on Tuesday, October 22, 2024.
