The Lagos Fire and Rescue Service has said that preliminary investigations suggest that the cause of the fire incident that occurred at LG office in the Abule Osun area of Lagos State, in the early hours of Sunday, was as a result of electrical surge.

The incident destroyed electronics and goods worth millions of Naira.

In a statement earlier, Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, had said the cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained.

“LASEMA received distress calls through the 767 and 112 toll-free emergency lines at about 00.15hrs, and activated the Lagos State Emergency Response Plans. Upon arrival at the scene at about 00.40hrs, it was discovered that fire was raging at the LG office located at the above address. The fire spread throughout the entire warehouse, affecting equipment, small forklifts, household goods and electronics worth hundreds of millions of naira,” he said.

“LASEMA has also activated the fire unit to support the operation with several additional fire appliance trucks for a quick intervention. No fatalities or injuries in the incident but the fire escalated to the entire premises.”

But the Lagos Fire and Rescue Service said the situation was swiftly brought under control, adding that damping down operations was currently in progress.

“Preliminary investigations suggest that the cause of the fire was an electrical surge. Thankfully, no casualties have been reported as a result of the incident.

“The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service remains committed to ensuring the safety and protection of all residents and properties in the state. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available,” the agency stated.

The incident comes few days after at least nine vehicles were engulfed in fire incident that occurred at a Mobil petrol station located at Allen Roundabout near Airport Hotel, Ikeja.

The fire outbreak, which happened at about 11:00 am, also affected parts of the uppermost floor of a nearby two-storey building.
