Beta experience for Guilty Gear Strive's new tag team mode begins today, here's how to get in on the 3v3 action

Guilty Gear Strive is now in its fourth year and developers at Arc System Works are giving fans a whole new way to experience the game as they’re bringing in a 3v3 tag team mode called “Team of 3.”

Team of 3 is still in development but a long weekend beta test is scheduled to begin Thursday evening at 7 p.m. PDT, and it’s open to everyone including those who have not yet purchased Strive. Read on to see how to participate and what all this beta will entail.

The beta will be live from Thursday, July 25 through Monday, July 29 and can be downloaded on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Games Pass, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam. This is a separate application than the main Guilty Gear Strive game, and does not require subscription services (Xbox Live or PlayStation Plus) to play with others online.

For this new mode you’ll be on a team of 3 characters who all share one health bar. The point character will play as usual but the two characters waiting in the wings will be able to use eight different assist “skills” that have offense, defense, interference, and support capabilities.

There are eight skills available in the demo and they’re tied to a special skill meter for usage. In addition to skills assist fighters can utilize “break in” maneuvers that are powerful special moves unique to each character.

The “tag” option is where things get especially interesting. One player has to initiate by calling up a tag timer, and the other has to essentially accept the request while this timer is counting down. If an assist character does accept, they’ll leap out onto the battlefield and fight alongside the main character for a brief period.

After this timer expires the original main character will leap out of the fray and become an assist character for the rest of the round. It’s important to note that characters can only be the main fighter once per round, so once you swap out there’s no going back.

That’s the gist of it all, but you can read up a bit more on the beta by checking out the Team of 3 page on the Guilty Gear website.

If you haven’t already seen it be sure to check out the Season 4 DLC trailer where you’ll see footage of Team of 3 as well as the unveiling of an incoming guest character from Cyberpunk Edgerunners.
