Manchester United are on the brink of bringing Matthijs de Ligt to Old Trafford, however with delays in getting the deal across the line, United are now looking elsewhere for back up options.
The ongoing fight to bring the Dutch centre-back has been an ongoing one, although one that is desperately wanted by both de Ligt and United manager Erik ten Hag. The partnership between the two started back at Ajax, with ten Hag appointing de Ligt as his captain, despite his young age, a move which ended with the club winning the Eredivisie League title and the Toto KNVB Beker Cup in the same year.
It’s known that talks between the two Dutchmen have been taking place with a verbal agreement being made regarding the defender’s personal terms at the club. However, since this news, no progress has appeared to take place other than knowing that talks between United and Bayern Munich are supposedly going positively.
With the information on the deal being somewhat limited at the moment and no news of United having submitted an official offer, the Red Devils are reportedly looking at other back up options.
News has just broke from that Sky Sports Germany, with Florian Plattenberg reporting that the Premier League club are now interested in Jonathan Tah and have contacted Bayer Leverkusen to find out Tah’s availability.
Tah joined Leverkusen back in 2015 from Hamburger SV for a fee of €9.5 million and has become a vital part of the Leverkusen squad which dominated the Bundesliga and DFB Pokal this season, helping Xabi Alonso’s side to complete the domestic double.
The 28-year-old has been graced from time to time with the captain’s armband and has made 353 appearances for the German club, with 14 goals and 12 assists.
It’s unsure at this time what the extend of these conversations between United and Leverkusen have been, or where Tah sits in the pecking order compared to de Ligt, however we still await the official news of any official bid for either of the Bundesliga defender.
