Manchester United have announced the appointment of club legend Ruud van Nistelrooy and Rene Hake as Erik ten Hag’s assistant coaches.

Ex-United striker van Nistelrooy has been linked to a return to English football with both Leicester and Burnley looking at the legend to bring star power to their club. Ultimately the nine-time Golden Boot winner saw the offer of joining United as a reunion too exciting to ignore.

Hake equally couldn’t pass up on the offer to join the Red Devils as ten Hag’s assistant as the United manager called Hake whilst the new assistant was in charge of Dutch club Go Ahead Eagles. The owners of GA Eagles saw this as a fantastic step for the Dutch manager and didn’t want to stand in his way of joining the Premier League.

Ten Hag signed a new deal with the club last week, extending his contract to 2026, and Van Nistelrooy along with Rene Hake have both been brought in as part of a strengthening of his backroom staff.

The Sporting Director Dan Ashworth has now released an official statement on the appointment of the two coaches.

In a statement, Ashworth said, “Together with Erik, we are working to strengthen all areas of our men’s first-team operations, and refreshing the coaching staff is an important part of that.”

“It’s a particular pleasure to welcome Ruud [van Nistelrooy] back to the club where he enjoyed so much success as a player, and I know that he and Rene [Hake] will help reinforce the winning mentality and high standards we are aiming for.”
