From weird Sonic fighters to a literal bean and a car, 10 secret characters from Sega's overlooked crossover fighting game

Fighting game crossovers have been around for over 30 years now starting with The King of Fighters as well as the likes of Marvel vs. Capcom, but not all of them transcend to become fan favorites in their own right.

Sega once attempted this collaboration for the Saturn with Fighters Megamix combining Virtua Fighter and Fighting Vipers, but there’s almost a dozen more weird and interesting hidden characters pulled from the company’s other franchises and beyond.

The combo maestro Desk recently released a fascinating new video doing a bit of a deeper dive on all 10 of these secret fighters to show off what they can do, detail their origins and anything else they bring to the table.

He starts out with Janet from Virtua Cop 2, who’s based on Aoi from Virtua Fighter 3 though she can even pull out and use her gun, which even includes the reload voice clip from her arcade game.

There’s a couple pulled from Sonic: The Fighters with Bean the Dynamite with his bomb throwing and Bark the Polar Bear where Desk notes how some of their attacks don’t seem to function properly.

Siba the unused Virtua Fighter character cut from the original game reappeared here though he’s even more deadly with the ability to use his sword, which can be broken if used too much like in Fighting Vipers.

Of course the most infamous of the hidden characters is Hornet, one of the cars from Daytona USA, who “stands” on its wheels to strike the opponent. It’s full moveset is unlocked, however, once the racecar sheds its armor.

And then there’s Deku, a literal bean in a hat that’s the only character completely original to Megamix because why not.

Unfortunately, Fighters Megamix has remained stuck on the Saturn (and Tiger Game.com) since 1997 in the West, so this “ultimate team up between Fighting Vipers and Virtua Fighter 2” remains largely inaccessible to most players through official means now.

Speaking of crossovers and guest fighters, the new Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection appears to be removing its wacky character in the upcoming release.

Desk also goes over the the Easter eggs and references packed into their move sets, costumes and stages along with more bonuses found in the game like Mr. Meat, so we highly recommend checking out his recent video below for info and combos in Fighters Megamix.
