Warriors debut “City Edition” court, jersey honoring cable cars

SAN FRANCISCO — The Warriors will debut their “City Edition” jerseys and home hardwood court designed to honor San Francisco’s iconic cable car on its 150th anniversary. The black and gold patterns will be debuted for Saturday’s game against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The uniform’s design is inspired by the classic cable car features. That includes “San Francisco” written in wavy typeface to replicate the ribboned street labels on the front of the trolleys. It also has a patch inspired by the cable car silhouette with two cable cars on the side of the shorts.

The special hardwood is lined black and gold with gold cable cars on opposite wings.

“It gives a real San Francisco vibe with the tracks,” Moses Moody said. “I really like it.”

Jonathan Kuminga grew an appreciation for the design when he watched the Warriors’ video explaining the cable car’s history in San Francisco.

“It shows a lot about the city, the cable cars,” Kuminga said. “After watching what the jersey represents, I do get the vision.”

This won’t be the only funky court the Warriors play on this week. They’ll unveil their In-Season Tournament court for Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Golden State’s floor at Chase Center is a little more subdued than some others around the league. Majority of the floor is a light brown color and the thick line down center court is golden yellow.

Last week, they played on Oklahoma City’s bright blue court for their first In-Season Tournament group round game last week, a win on Steph Curry’s buzzer-beating floater.

There was some concern that the opulent colors would interfere with the players’ depth perception during the game, but both the Thunder and Warriors didn’t seem to have any issues. The Warriors shot 53.3% (49-92) from the field and the Thunder 60.2% (50-for-83). Moody said it took some time to adjust on defense, navigating his peripheral vision.

“Trying to pay attention to what they’re doing, peripheral vision,” Moody said. “Not even just the blue court, the gold in the middle. It was a lot.”

The Warriors will play their second road tournament game in Sacramento on Nov. 28, where the court is dark gray and blue down the middle. Not too flashy.

Some of the other tournament courts across the league are even more vibrant. A few, such as the Philadelphia 76ers and Houston Rockets have bright red courts and the Phoenix Suns and Utah Jazz have purple courts.
