The ancient city of Calabar was transformed into a vibrant display of heritage and tradition on Saturday, December 20th, as the annual Utomo Obong festival drew dignitaries and cultural enthusiasts from across the nation.

Among the prominent attendees was Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong, who joined hundreds of sons and daughters of the Efik Kingdom to pay homage to the Obong of Calabar. The Senator described the event as a vital cultural touchstone, emphasizing its role in maintaining the continuity of leadership and ancestral wisdom.

Speaking on the historical significance of the throne, Senator Ekpenyong highlighted the unique status of the Obong, who is traditionally referred to as the “Treaty King.”

“He is rightly called the ‘Treaty King,’ a title rooted in history, reflecting the pivotal treaties entered into by the Efik Kingdom and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland,” Ekpenyong noted.

He further explained that these historical agreements shaped early diplomacy and commerce, serving as a “reminder of the strategic foresight, sophistication, and global awareness that have long defined the Efik people.”

The Senator expressed deep pride in the aesthetic and intellectual depth of his heritage, noting that Efik culture is defined by a “seamless blend of elegance and depth” visible in the music, dances, and iconic attire on display during the festivities.

Beyond the spectacle, Ekpenyong emphasized the personal and communal importance of the gathering.

“Utomo Obong is always a beautiful opportunity to reconnect with elders whose wisdom anchors us, and with old friends who remind us of shared journeys and enduring bonds,” he said.

Following the formal traditional rites at the palace, the Senator took the opportunity to engage directly with the public. He was seen on the streets of Calabar interacting with constituents, listening to their concerns, and sharing in the festive atmosphere.

Reflecting on the day’s activities, which bridged high-level tradition with grassroots engagement, Senator Ekpenyong described the experience as “in every sense, a truly amazing day.”
