Cross River Moves Against Unlicensed Herbal Vendors, Arrests Ten

By Our Reporter

Authorities in Cross River State have apprehended and arraigned at least ten unlicensed traditional medicine practitioners. The arrests follow a formal complaint lodged by the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) regarding illegal “trado-medical trade fairs” being held at the Calabar Municipality Council Headquarters.

The NMA’s intervention was prompted by concerns that these “quacks” were selling uncertified products lacking NAFDAC approval. Medical experts warned that these vendors were making unverified health claims, posing significant risks to vulnerable residents who might be misled into using dangerous or ineffective treatments.

In a joint statement, NMA State Chairman Dr. Ezoke Epoke and Secretary Dr. Akanimo Ekeruke expressed gratitude to Governor Bassey Otu for his “decisive and proactive” action. The association highlighted that the swift enforcement demonstrates the state’s commitment to:

Safeguarding public health and well-being. Enforcing necessary healthcare regulations.
Ensuring only safe and effective medical practices are permitted in the state.

The NMA reaffirmed its dedication to working alongside the state government to protect citizens from the dangers of unlicensed medical practitioners and to promote quality healthcare for all residents.
