Bakassi Legislative Assembly Marks One Year with Notable Achievements

The 7th Bakassi Legislative Assembly has marked one legislative year with significant achievements in lawmaking, oversight, and community representation, reflecting renewed commitment to deepening democratic governance at the grassroots level.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Leader of the 7th Assembly, Rt. Hon. Grace Bassey, congratulated members for what she described as “outstanding milestones achieved within one legislative year.”

According to the statement, within the period under review, the successfully passed two byelaws into law, with one additional byelaw currently in progress. It also raised and debated eight impactful motions, while ensuring the successful and effective execution of oversight and legislative functions.

“These accomplishments reflect an Assembly that is focused, proactive, and intentional about delivering quality service to the people of Bakassi,” the statement read, adding that the legislature has remained steadfast in “advocating community needs and strengthening democratic governance at the grassroots level.”

Rt. Hon. Bassey commended all councillors for their dedication, teamwork, and relentless effort in ensuring that the Assembly lived up to its mandate despite the challenges encountered during the legislative year.

She further reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to sustained progress, accountability, improved legislative engagements, and continued partnership with relevant stakeholders to drive development across Bakassi Local Government Area.

Observers note that the Bakassi Legislative Assembly’s achievements come amid ongoing efforts to reposition local governance structures in Cross River state toward stronger accountability and participatory democracy.

The 7th Assembly was declared by the Clerk, Mr Oku Ekpenyong, on the 11th of November 2024. This Assembly elected Bakassi’s first-ever female Leader –Rt. Hon. Grace Etim Bassey of Ward 7.
