The serene Agbokim Waterfall community in Etung local government area of Cross River State was thrown into distress in the early hours of Tuesday when a massive fire consumed five houses and properties worth millions of naira.

An eyewitness, Thomas Akam, told The Paradise News that the blaze originated from a leak in a petrol jerrican stored inside one of the buildings. According to him, the petrol spill ignited after coming into contact with an open flame near the premises, sparking the devastating fire.

“This tragedy affected the entire community deeply,” Akam said. “Among the victims was the residence of the Etung Council Vice Chairman, Hon. Assam Amba. Thankfully, no lives were lost, but the destruction was terrible.”

Akam said the fire rapidly intensified, with the absence of fire service personnel to battle the inferno, leading to uncontrollable damage. He further disclosed that the petrol involved was reportedly destined for Cameroon.

However, Cross River State Fire Service Director, Mr. Dennis Ajom, confirmed their prompt response following notification from their station in nearby Ikom local government area. “Our team was quick to mobilize upon being informed. We are currently compiling a full report on the incident,” he stated.
