The Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem, on Saturday joined family, friends, and dignitaries to mourn the passing of renowned academic, Professor Ibiang Oden Ewa, urging the people of the state to embrace unity, humility, and purposeful living.
Speaking at the funeral in Ugep, Yakurr Local Government Area, Ayambem described the late Professor Ewa as a man of intellect, wisdom, and impeccable character whose life should inspire politicians and citizens alike.
“Here lies the remains of Professor Ibiang Oden Ewa, so much intellect, so much wisdom, so much flexibility. This should be an eye-opener to us, especially those in politics. How well we live and the relationships we build will outlive our existence,” the Speaker said.

He reminded mourners of life’s fleeting nature, warned against malice, backstabbing, and treachery, and stressed that, in the end, human ownership of land is reduced to just six feet, a privilege not guaranteed in some societies.
“It is a moment for sober reflection and reinvention. What is the essence of being malicious or edging people out? We must unite as a people in Cross River State,” he urged.
Ayambem acknowledged the painful loss of a patriarch but encouraged them to preserve the values and morals the late academic instilled. He noted that all testimonies at the service reflected only positivity about Professor Ewa, affirming his peaceful and principled life.
“Professor Ibiang, God in Heaven welcomes you with angels playing sounds because you lived well and right. You bequeathed the right morals and etiquette to your children. I see this exemplified in my friend Oden, whose humility and accommodating nature reflect the upbringing of a thoroughbred father,” Ayambem concluded.
